Exclusive: Discover how to optimize points, miles, and coverage with Apple's new iPhone 16, Watch, and AirPods.

The annual "iPhone day" has passed.
On Friday, Apple unveiled its latest lineup of beloved devices: the iPhone 16 series, Watch Series 10, and AirPods. These new models became available in stores on September 20, generating the usual excitement around their launch.
At the iconic Fifth Avenue store in New York, Apple’s executives, including CEO Tim Cook, welcomed eager customers, many of whom queued for hours to be the first to experience the new gadgets.

Deirdre O'Brien, Apple's senior vice president of retail, expressed particular excitement on Friday.
"We truly live for today, and you can sense the energy; it's tough to sleep the night before," she shared with TPG in an exclusive interview on launch day. (She managed about four hours of sleep the night before, she revealed to TPG.)
Preorders for the latest devices kicked off on Friday, September 13, just days after the company’s special keynote event where they introduced their newest offerings, including a brand-new model of AirPods.

With enhancements to the cameras, battery life, durability, and noise cancellation in the entry-level AirPods, the latest devices are sure to attract many consumers, particularly those who are frequently traveling.
If you're considering splurging on new technology, O'Brien provided some tips to make the most of your investment. Here’s everything you need to know.
Making the purchase

When it comes time to purchase a new Apple device, O'Brien asserts that no store is better suited than Apple’s own retail locations.
Apple employees are well-versed in the new products, and it’s this "connection" and "capacity to educate our customers" that enhances the purchasing experience, she noted. O'Brien emphasized that the stores provide a comprehensive experience that she feels surpasses what third-party retailers offer.
Apple store employees, referred to as specialists, are available to answer questions, set up your device (including activating your cellular service), and share useful tips during the sessions branded as "Today at Apple."
Given that iPhone demand often exceeds supply upon a new release, O'Brien recommends that customers increase their chances by keeping an eye on online availability for their desired devices and opting for in-store pickup to secure their choice.

Naturally, many other retailers offer Apple products; for example, you can acquire an iPhone from your chosen carrier (AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile) or through third-party stores like Best Buy and Walmart.
In some cases, purchasing an iPhone through a third party can yield a better deal than buying directly from Apple, particularly during special promotions, so it's wise to compare your options before making a decision.
Trade-in options
The new iPhones come with a hefty price tag, and O'Brien's primary suggestion for making the purchase more budget-friendly is to trade in your existing device.
"First and foremost, you gain value," O'Brien stated regarding the Apple Trade-In program that recycles old phones. "Additionally, it’s beneficial for the environment, which is a core value for us at Apple."
If you have any unused devices lying around, Apple will provide credit (or a gift card) towards the purchase of a new phone. Credits can vary from $40 for an iPhone 7 Plus (2016) to up to $650 if you trade in last year's iPhone 15 Pro Max.

To take advantage of this specific trade-in offer, you'll need to make your purchase directly from Apple, although some third-party retailers may have similar promotions.
It's always wise to read the terms and conditions associated with any trade-in offers.
Shopping portal bonuses
While O'Brien provided useful tips, there are additional factors to consider when purchasing new devices to ensure you get the most value.
First, look for shopping portal bonuses. By starting your shopping experience on one of these portals, you'll still be directed to purchase directly from Apple, but you can earn extra points or miles. Keep in mind that some devices may not qualify for portal bonuses immediately after launch, so this is definitely worth considering if you plan to buy later.
I suggest utilizing a shopping portal aggregator like Cashback Monitor to quickly find the best return options.

Which cards to use
The next important consideration is which credit card to use for your purchase.
For O'Brien, the top choice is the Apple Card.
"You can always opt for an Apple Card, which comes with a variety of fantastic features," she noted.
The Apple Card can be a good option since it offers an interest-free monthly installment plan and allows you to earn 3% back on purchases made directly through Apple. The information regarding the Apple Card has been independently collected by Dinogo. The details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
However, it might not be the best choice for maximizing rewards and extended warranty benefits.
In the past, I've used The Platinum Card® from American Express for my Apple purchases. While you only earn 1 American Express Membership Rewards point (valued at 2 cents each, according to TPG's September 2024 valuations) for every dollar spent, the card’s included purchase protection offers excellent coverage in case I damage or lose my iPhone.
Additionally, Amex provides ongoing cellphone protection with the Platinum Card, making it my top choice for purchasing iPhones.
Ultimately, considering the steep prices of Apple's latest devices, I would prioritize cards that offer purchase protection and extended warranty benefits over those that provide the highest rewards. Other excellent options for purchase protection include:
Card | Maximum coverage amount (per item or claim) | Maximum coverage amount (per card or account) | Coverage duration (days) | Earning rate on Apple purchases | Annual fee |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
American Express® Gold Card* | $10,000 per item (or $500 per event for natural disasters) | $50,000 per card, per calendar year | 90 | 1 Membership Rewards point per dollar | $325 (see rates and fees) |
Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card | $10,000 per claim | $50,000 per account | 90 | 2 Capital One miles per dollar | $395 |
Ink Business Cash® Credit Card | $10,000 per claim | $50,000 per account | 120 | 1% cash back | $0 |
Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express* | $1,000 per item (or $500 per event for natural disasters) | $50,000 per card, per year | 90 | 3% cash back on U.S. online retail purchases, on up to $6,000 in purchases per year (then 1%) | $0 annual fee (see rates and fees). |
Chase Freedom Flex® | $500 per claim | $50,000 per account | 120 | 1% cash back | $0 |

Protect your investment
Apple and various third-party retailers offer AppleCare+ and other proprietary warranties. These options may be worth considering, especially for accidental damage on non-iPhone devices, but savvy consumers with the right credit card may already have coverage for damage to their iPhones.
Nowadays, many of our top recommended credit cards provide ongoing cellphone protection, provided you pay your carrier bill with an eligible card that includes loss and damage protection. This alone could offset the cost of an annual fee if you accidentally damage your device.
I personally suggest using either the Amex Platinum, the Chase Freedom Flex, or the Capital One Venture X, all of which come with both purchase protection and cellphone protection benefits.
Card | Coverage/deductible | Notable exclusions | Earning rate on cellphone bill | Annual fee |

The Platinum Card from American Express** | Up to $800 per claim, with a maximum of two claims per 12-month period (with a $50 deductible) | Cosmetic damage that doesn't affect the phone's ability to function; lost phones | 1 Amex Membership Rewards point per dollar | $695 (see rates and fees) |
Chase Freedom Flex | Up to $800 per claim, with a maximum of two claims worth $1,000 per 12-month period (with a $50 deductible) | Cosmetic damage that doesn't affect the phone's ability to function; lost phones | 1 Chase Ultimate Rewards point per dollar | $0 |
Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card | Up to $800 per claim, with a maximum of two claims worth $1,600 per 12-month period (with $50 deductible) | Cosmetic damage that doesn't affect the phone's ability to function; lost phones | 2 Capital One miles per dollar | $395 |

Meeting minimum spending
Lastly, consider timing your purchase with the opening of a new credit card. This approach would help you get closer to meeting the minimum spending requirement to unlock a substantial sign-up bonus. Currently, one of our top recommendations is the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which offers 60,000 Ultimate Rewards points after you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months, plus a $300 statement credit for Chase Travel℠ purchases made in the first year.
You can view a complete list of top offers here. Just keep in mind that not all these cards come with purchase protection and extended warranty benefits, so if you prioritize coverage over rewards, refer to the chart above.
For Capital One products mentioned on this page, some benefits may be offered by Visa® or Mastercard® and can vary by product. Please check the respective Guide to Benefits for specifics, as terms and exclusions apply.
