Face masks mandatory, Mickey takes a step back: What to anticipate as Disney Cruise Line sets sail in August

Disney Cruise Line will kick off voyages from the U.S. on August 9, marking the end of over a year and a half without ticketed guests. The Disney Dream will provide three- and four-night cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida to its exclusive island, Castaway Cay.
A variety of new protocols have been introduced, along with modifications to the Disney experience you know and love. Here’s what you can expect (and what you might miss), as well as how the new regulations onboard vary from those at the parks.
What to anticipate if you decide to cruise

Alongside an increased number of hand sanitizing stations, improved cleaning protocols, a larger medical team onboard, social distancing measures, and reduced capacity (both overall and in various venues), all passengers aged over 2 are required to wear masks in indoor areas, unless they are eating or drinking, regardless of their vaccination status.
Any cruiser who does not voluntarily present proof of vaccination upon boarding will need to provide a negative PCR test result taken within the last five days, undergo rapid PCR testing at the terminal on embarkation day, and have travel insurance that covers medical expenses related to COVID-19. All costs associated with these requirements will be their responsibility.
The experience will also heavily depend on the Disney Cruise Line mobile app, which facilitates reduced social interactions by offering pre-cruise check-in, virtual queues, muster drill details, and even assistance from guest services.
However, one of the most significant changes for devoted Disney cruisers will be the lack of character meet-and-greets, typically a beloved feature on board. While iconic figures like Mickey and Minnie will still be present, passengers won't be able to interact closely with them for now.
Moreover, buffets will now be managed by crew members; deck parties and fish extender gift exchanges are on hold; the onboard nursery is temporarily closed; some kids club activities will require reservations; and there will be multiple theater performances along with two fireworks shows (reservations needed) to enhance physical distancing.
Comparing ship regulations to park regulations

If you're visiting Disney World before your Disney Cruise Line journey, you'll notice that the current policies at the theme parks vary greatly from those on board.
At present, Disney's theme parks do not require masks for vaccinated guests -- even in indoor areas. The requirements were lifted in June for those who are vaccinated. However, since proof of vaccination isn't mandatory, guests are expected to follow mask guidelines based on trust. This has resulted in most adults and children (including those under 12) not wearing masks.
Furthermore, there are no testing mandates for park visitors, nor is there a dependable method of contact tracing implemented.
Previously, parks enforced strict mask rules and physical distancing, along with significantly reduced capacity managed through a reservation system. Capacity has now been increased, emphasizing that cruise lines are consistently held to more rigorous standards than other sectors of tourism.
Similar to the ships, parks are currently not permitting close interactions between guests and beloved Disney characters.
Other Disney vessels

Disney Cruise Line anticipates providing more details soon regarding the restart of its other ships. Currently, departures for Disney Fantasy until Aug. 28, 2021, and Disney Wonder until Sept. 19, 2021, have been suspended.
Disney Magic sailings in the U.S. are canceled through Nov. 4, 2021. The ship is currently offering a selection of short summer cruises—two to four days—from various UK ports at limited capacity, with all adults required to be fully vaccinated. Additionally, all passengers must undergo pre-cruise testing.
Disney has recently revealed dining information for its latest ship, Disney Wish, which is expected to launch in June 2022.
