Greece Implements New Travel Regulations
On December 16, Greece revealed updated rules for international travelers seeking entry, joining other destinations in tightening entry protocols due to rising concerns over the Omicron variant.
Starting December 19, all travelers entering Greece, whether vaccinated or not, must present either a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours or a rapid antigen test conducted within 24 hours prior to arrival, according to the Greek Health Ministry. This requirement affects all travelers aged five and older, irrespective of their vaccination or recovery status, or entry method into Greece, as noted by the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Greece.
This change modifies a rule introduced earlier in the week that mandated a PCR test no older than 48 hours.
Previously, Greece required travelers to provide proof of vaccination, recovery, or a negative COVID test. In-country, proof of vaccination or recovery is necessary for entry into most businesses; as of November 21, 2021, unvaccinated adults are barred from accessing dining areas, entertainment venues (cinemas, theaters), museums, exhibition centers, fitness facilities, and sports arenas, according to the embassy.
Travelers heading back to the United States will encounter stricter measures as well: Starting December 6, all international arrivals, regardless of vaccination status, are required to take a COVID-19 viral test no more than one calendar day before their flight to the U.S.
