Lufthansa Introduces New Routes in North America for 2024
As Europe's largest airline, Lufthansa is optimistic that demand for European vacations will remain strong next year, as evidenced by its recent expansion announcement.
During the summer of 2024, the Frankfurt-based airline plans to enter two new U.S. markets, launch one new route, and increase daily flight frequencies from four cities across the nation.
"Lufthansa Group aims to connect people, cultures, and economies around the globe in the most sustainable way possible," stated Dirk Janzen, vice president of passenger sales for the Americas at Lufthansa Group Airlines. "We are committed to this mission, particularly in 2024, with exciting expansion plans throughout North America. This growth will result in more routes, increased frequencies, and smoother connections."
So, where exactly will Lufthansa expand in the United States next year?
Lufthansa's New Market Ventures
Beginning June 2024, Lufthansa will launch two routes from new markets:
- Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport to Frankfurt, operating five days a week (every day except Wednesday and Friday), available year-round starting June 4. These flights will use a Boeing 789, with one-way fares beginning at $1,595.
- Raleigh–Durham International Airport to Frankfurt, also five days a week (every day except Sunday and Wednesday), operating year-round from June 6. Flights will be conducted using an Airbus A330, with prices starting at $1,311 one way.
Lufthansa commented that Raleigh–Durham is "one of the nation’s most vibrant academic hubs, featuring esteemed research facilities and emerging technology firms. The extensive connections between these institutions, especially in technology, and those in Europe, the Middle East, and India, make this route vital for academics and business travelers alike."
In total, Lufthansa will serve 27 gateways across the United States in 2024.
Additional Lufthansa Expansions and Updates
Alongside the new destinations, Lufthansa will introduce a daily direct flight from Seattle–Tacoma International Airport to Munich Airport starting May 30, 2024 (the airline currently operates flights from Seattle to Frankfurt). One-way fares begin at $1,217, with the service using an A350-900 aircraft.
Lufthansa will also boost flight frequencies from key gateways before next summer, including:
- Austin–Bergstrom International Airport to Frankfurt (increasing from three to four flights per week starting March 31, 2024) operated by Boeing 787s.
- Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport to Frankfurt (upgrading from six to daily flights on October 31, 2023) also using Boeing 787s.
- San Diego International Airport to Munich (expanding from five to seven days a week starting June 2, 2024) on A350 aircraft.
Later this year, Lufthansa plans to launch its new onboard product, called “Allegris”, featuring enhancements across all service classes. The updated cabins will debut on the newly acquired Boeing 787-9s, set to enter service in early 2024, meaning passengers on the Austin and Dallas to Frankfurt routes may be among the first to experience the revamped planes.
