New COVID-19 measures are being implemented this week in the UK

New social distancing regulations took effect on Monday in the U.K., including government recommendations to work from home whenever feasible for the foreseeable future.
Additionally, starting December 14, individuals identified as having close contact with a positive case will be required to take a free NHS lateral flow test every day for seven days, instead of self-isolating. Those who test positive must continue to isolate, and unvaccinated adults are required to self-isolate for ten days.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that face masks and COVID-19 passes will now be mandatory for entry into certain large venues across the United Kingdom as part of the nation's "Plan B" strategy in response to the rapidly spreading omicron variant. This variant is spreading swiftly, with the first reported death, and is expected to become the dominant strain in the U.K. in a matter of days.
Starting December 15, the NHS Covid Pass will be required for entry to nightclubs and other large venues, including indoor spaces with 500 or more attendees, outdoor areas with over 4,000 people, and any venue hosting more than 10,000 guests. This measure aims to keep these locations open without reducing capacity. This update adds another layer of protocol for travelers visiting the U.K. during the Christmas season, as well as for U.K. residents.
While those fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can initially obtain the Covid Pass, its validity will likely depend on receiving subsequent COVID-19 boosters in the near future. All adults are now expected to be offered a booster shot by the end of December, moving up from the original timeline of the end of January.
"The NHS Covid Pass can still be acquired with just two doses, but we will continue to monitor this as boosters become available," stated the Prime Minister.
Moreover, face masks will be mandatory in most public indoor spaces, including venues, theaters, and cinemas.
Work-from-home policies have also been reinstated to promote remote work wherever feasible going forward. Businesses have until today (Dec. 13) to finalize these arrangements. The new regulations create a unique scenario where the public can attend Christmas parties with their colleagues, as long as they don't enter the workplace together.
"Employers should take the remainder of this week to discuss work arrangements with their staff," he stated during a press conference on December 8. "Starting Monday [December 13], you should work from home if possible. Go to the office if necessary, but prioritize working from home if you can."
