New Jersey to Introduce Black Heritage Trail

On September 7, Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill into law that allocates $1 million to the New Jersey Historical Commission for the establishment of a Black Heritage Trail.
Through the creation of this new trail, New Jersey aims to better recognize the history and resilience of Black residents, both past and present. The route will include commemorative plaques at historically significant locations, including landmarks and museums.
The trail “will showcase Black abolitionists, veterans, artists, entertainers, and other influential figures who have left their lasting impact on New Jersey’s history,” as stated by the governor’s office.
Some potential sites being considered for the New Jersey Black Heritage Trail include:
- A museum in Cape May dedicated to abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who played a key role in rescuing enslaved individuals via the Underground Railroad.
- Perth Amboy, the city where Thomas Mundy Peterson became the first free Black man to vote in 1870.
- Hinchliffe Stadium, one of the last remaining venues from the Negro League.
- Red Bank, the hometown of musician Count Basie.
New Jersey Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson emphasized that Black history has often been overlooked in New Jersey, “despite the significant impact of the African-American community on the state.”
She hopes the Black Heritage Trail will highlight key historical landmarks across New Jersey and recognize the “individuals who contributed to shaping our nation,” Reynolds-Jackson stated.
The exact locations and timing for the placement of the markers have yet to be determined. However, the state introduced a virtual Black Heritage Trail in 2021, offering curated three-day itineraries. These itineraries are organized by region and include details about Black-owned businesses and restaurants to explore along the way.
