Sydney’s coastal drives: 6 stunning routes to explore
Among the top day trips from Sydney, the Hunter Valley and Blue Mountains are typically the most popular choices.
However, with such a breathtaking coastline to the north and south of the city, ocean drives are equally adored by surfers, backpackers, and travelers alike.
On sunny days, the surf beaches and hidden coves along the New South Wales coastline draw everyone from Sydney in search of adventure.
Here are six destinations that can easily be reached in under five hours of driving.
1. The Grand Pacific Drive to Jervis Bay
Jervis Bay is renowned for its pristine white sand beaches and incredible dolphin watching. All this awaits you at the end of a scenic three-hour road trip south of Sydney along the Grand Pacific Drive.
There’s much more to see along the way, including the Nan Tien Temple, just outside Wollongong, which is the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere. Don't miss the Kiama Blowhole, where water dramatically shoots from the rocks during big swells, and the iconic Lighthouse, both perfect stops for sightseeing.
Restaurants to visit: World Famous Fish N Chips in Huskisson is a must-try, though expect a wait — but the large fried flounder fillets and steak fries are totally worth it. Also, in the charming town of Berry, check out Our Bookshop & Cafe for a delicious blend of food and books, and Hungry Duck, recently awarded a hat, offers an exceptional dining experience — both located on the Princes Highway.
2. Royal National Park to the Southern Highlands
Skip Route 1 and follow the coastal roads of the National Park, winding through lush rainforest, cliffside lookouts, and rock pools on this scenic three-hour drive.
The northern suburbs of Wollongong, including Stanwell Park, have a charming and laid-back vibe, where artists and surfers live in harmony. Stop by Stanwell Park to experience this unique atmosphere.
Shortly after Wollongong, the drive takes a turn inland toward Moss Vale, passing through the Upper Kangaroo Valley — one of the world's true natural basins — and the Macquarie Pass National Park.
Winery to check out: Situated just northeast of Bowral in Mittagong, Tertini Wines offers a select collection of award-winning Rieslings and Pinot Noirs. After your tasting, relax at barrel-style tables and enjoy coffee and light bites.
3. Heading south to Narooma
This scenic drive takes you through the coastal sections of the Princes Highway, south of Ulladulla, all the way to the Victorian border.
As you journey south, you'll be greeted by a continuous stretch of beaches to your left and vast national parkland to your right.
While fishing and water sports are popular in the south, the region also boasts historic towns filled with museums, wildlife parks, and wineries.
Tour to experience: Take a half-day excursion from Narooma to Montague Island, home to colonies of Little Penguins and fur seals. You can also opt to stay overnight in the lighthouse keeper’s cottage for a unique experience.
4. From the Central Coast to The Entrance
The quickest route to the Central Coast takes you mostly inland, bypassing the stunning seaside views.
You can still reach the area in under two and a half hours by taking the scenic route. After following Route 1 up to Gosford, head south to Woy Woy.
As you drive along The Scenic Road, a 33-kilometer coastal route through Bouddi National Park, you'll pass through charming towns like Copacabana.
Choose from the quaint beaches along the way, with plenty of lookout points, cafes, and shops. Or explore the more vibrant town of Terrigal. Don’t miss the daily opportunity to feed pelicans on the beach near the bridge in The Entrance.
Pub to visit for a pint: The Dam Hotel is the oldest pub in Wyong still owned and operated by the MacDougal family. Known for its delicious food and welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.
5. The Legendary Pacific Drive to Myall Lakes
The stunning views of Myall Lakes National Park make the extra driving hours well worth it.
Just under two hours north of Newcastle, follow the Pacific Highway which curves inland before veering towards the coastal road at Bulahdelah.
This route takes you through state parks and nature reserves, eventually leading to the pristine waters and playful wallabies of Myall Lakes National Park.
A car ferry transports you to a peninsula with towering sand dunes, peaceful koala habitats, and excellent birdwatching spots.
Where to stay: Myall Shores Nature Resort, located in the heart of the national park, offers lakeside bungalows and a variety of water sports activities.
6. The Northern Beaches Road Trip
The coastal drive along the northern beaches is a hidden gem for locals – it takes you past Manly, Freshwater, Dee Why, and Whale Beach in less than two hours. Beaches on one side, lagoons and lakes on the other.
After passing Mona Vale, the Pittwater waterway appears on your left and stays with you until you reach the Barrenjoey Lighthouse at the end of the peninsula – a true paradise.
Activity to enjoy: Catch the ferry to Mackerel Beach for bushwalking, picnicking, or capturing the stunning panoramic views.
