November in Scottsdale is pleasant and enchanting. The temperatures are cool but not cold, enhanced by nearly constant sunshine that graces this gem in the saguaro-dotted Arizona Desert. The skies remain mostly clear day and night.

This perfect blend creates ideal conditions for outdoor activities. Stroll along the picturesque Arizona Canal Path, connecting Scottsdale to nearby Glendale and Phoenix. Enjoy biking or horseback riding on the wild trails of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Spend a few nights at the Dark Sky Resort ADERO to experience the best stargazing you’ll ever encounter. Experience a taste of the Old West at Cowboy College, where you can learn to handle a lasso.

If stargazing isn't quite enough, you can take to the skies. In November, hot air balloons ascend at sunset over Las Barrancas, returning after the summer hiatus.

Explore the brewery origins of Pabst and Miller or hop between the city’s numerous craft breweries and taprooms. Renowned for its inventive craft beers, Milwaukee also offers plenty of fine dining to complement your drinks.

At the top of the culinary scene is Sanford, one of the finest restaurants in the US. For a more casual yet equally delicious option, try Usinger’s bratwurst. It rivals the best you’ll find in Germany (and surpasses many found there!). If you're in the mood for ready-to-eat sausages, head to Vanguard.

Milwaukee is renowned as the city of festivals. The family-friendly Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival kicks off on November 21st, while Enchant will bring Christmas festivities to the city later in the month, with 2024 dates to be confirmed.

3. New York City, New York

New York is always buzzing with energy. However, Dinogo data shows that November tends to be less crowded, likely due to its average temperature of 48°F. Still, two major events make it one of the best holiday destinations in November.

On the first Sunday of the month, over 30,000 runners hit the streets for the New York City Marathon. The event showcases the spirit of the Big Apple, with thousands more lining the route to cheer, wave flags, enjoy hotdogs, and create a lively atmosphere.

Even more dazzling (and lively) is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 28th, 2024. This year’s event will feature the familiar lineup of giant inflatable pop culture icons making their way to 34th Street. Accompanying them will be marching bands, performance groups, and throngs of spectators, all ready to usher in the holiday season.

Thanksgiving serves as the launchpad for Christmas, embodying a festive spirit with a commercial twist. Few places celebrate better than New York, where expansive Christmas markets like Union Square and my personal favorite, Bryant Park, come alive, complete with a charming ice rink. Bring your own skates for free skating.

4. Everglades National Park, Florida

• Why visit in November? The majority of mosquitoes are on vacation during this time.

For something unique, Florida presents the stunning Everglades. It's just a quick day trip from Miami or Orlando, making it an excellent base for exploration. Plus, there's no better time to experience the swamp than now!

With cooler temperatures and reduced humidity, wildlife thrives while mosquitoes are thankfully nowhere to be found. As the waters recede, animals gather at watering holes, and Florida Manatees come looking for warmer waters.

Hiking trails are accessible and the outdoor adventures are incredible. Mytour through the world’s second-largest mangrove forest at the Ten Thousand Islands Wildlife Refuge, where you might encounter turtles, manatees, and even the occasional dolphin. A must-do is a ride on a classic Everglades airboat to witness large gatherings of Florida alligators.

November is particularly special as it’s the month of festivals, especially those honoring Zivania brandy and local wines.

Zivania is a local pomace brandy crafted on the island, and the Cypriots take great pride in their spirited creation. Every year, the Double Zivania Festival is celebrated in two picturesque villages. Over two weekends in November, Alona and Pelendri host events showcasing traditional Zivania, complete with tastings, music, dancing, and of course, more tastings. Come prepared to indulge!

After enjoying enough Zivania, make your way to the Pithari Festival in Koilani, one of the most charming villages in Limassol. The tradition of opening old Pithari wine casks marks the wine harvest and brings a warm, simple celebration filled with traditional attire, dancing, and, of course, more wine.

6. Verbier, Switzerland

• Why visit in November? For the ultimate in Alpine luxury and the start of the ski season.

Located just two hours from Geneva, Verbier is nestled in the stunning Swiss landscapes. If you’re seeking the pinnacle of the European ski scene, this tiny alpine village is the place to be. Surrounded by majestic mountain peaks, Verbier offers a thrilling blend of adventure and opulence.

November might seem a tad early for a ski getaway, but those days of skiing being the only option are behind us. Hikers can explore 300 miles of trails, while mountain bikers enjoy over 500 miles of cross-country, downhill, and enduro routes. And depending on conditions, skiing could still be an option.

Numerous ski lifts open on weekends starting mid-month, granting early access to pristine high-altitude snow. For après-ski, the offerings are nothing short of extravagant. If you’re going to indulge, do it with flair. Enjoy dinner and drinks at Le Rouge, then dance the night away at Farm Club, a legendary spot in Verbier known for its wild stories and steep prices.

7. Rome, Italy

• Why visit in November? Experience the Eternal City at its wildest yet surprisingly tranquil (relatively speaking).

Rome truly lives up to its title as the Eternal City. It resembles a vast, sprawling museum that tells the story of human history, creativity, and resilience in stunning detail. With its incredible art and rich history, the sheer magnitude can be daunting, especially during the summer when crowds are overwhelming, which is why I prefer visiting in late fall.

While it may be chillier, visitor numbers are at their lowest, along with hotel rates. The colder, windier weather gives the city a more somber appearance—the Roman ruins appear more majestic than ever. And, of course, there’s plenty to explore inside. The Vatican alone could consume an entire day, depending on your energy levels.

The charm of Rome lies in its ability to surprise at every corner. Beyond the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, and the Colosseum, the neighborhoods are truly enchanting. Visit the Basilicas di Santa Maria and di Santa Cecilia in the atmospheric streets of Trastevere. Indulge in quinto quarto cuisine in Testaccio, then quench your thirst in one of the lively local enotecas of bohemian Monti.

The Salta Province in northwest Argentina is a paradise to discover in November. With long days, pleasant temperatures, and the vibrant city of Salta and its stunning surroundings gleaming, it’s the perfect time to visit. Even prices are at their annual lowest.

Salta boasts an abundance of colonial architecture. Stroll through the charming cobbled streets to see the powder-pink Catedral Basílica de Salta and the bright terracotta Basílica de San Francisco. The MAAM Museum of High Altitude Archaeology offers a captivating glimpse into the rich heritage of the High Andes.

If there’s one experience you can’t afford to miss, it’s Salta’s train to the clouds. Departing from the city center, it ascends 4,220 meters into the Andes, making it one of the most breathtaking train journeys in the world. Winding through vibrant rock formations, it culminates at the jaw-dropping La Polvorilla Viaduct, where the views are nothing short of spectacular. 

9. South Island, New Zealand

While autumn descends on the US, spring blossoms in New Zealand, making it one of the best destinations in November. An outdoor lover's paradise, whatever adventure you dream up—whether it’s scuba diving, surfing, skydiving, skiing, bungee jumping, or white-water rafting—you'll find it in Aotearoa.

The longer your stay, the better, as this is truly road trip territory. From Christchurch, rent a vintage van (this is the beauty I drove) and follow the coastal route south to Dunedin. Push your limits on Baldwin Street, known as the world’s steepest street.

Venture inland northwest for some thrills in Queenstown, then prepare to be awed by a cruise through Milford Sound. On your journey back north, visit the surreal Kaikoura, a quaint coastal village that feels like the edge of the world. Challenge yourself in the wildlife-rich waves at Mangamaunu, or opt for a sustainable whale-watching experience with Maori-owned Whale Watch.

In November, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more vibrant destination than Jaipur. While the Pink City is never dull, this month is particularly spectacular as Diwali lights up India with a burst of color and festivity.

The Hindu Festival of Lights represents the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Beginning on October 29th and continuing through the first weekend of November, the city is ablaze with a dazzling display of fireworks, candles, and glowing lamps. The atmosphere of joy and festivity that envelops both locals and visitors lingers long after the celebrations end.

Participation is universal. Residents exchange gifts during elaborate festivities, while vibrant decorations turn nearly every fort, palace, and monument into royal spectacles. The Statue Circle, Albert Hall Museum, and Jal Mahal are breathtaking, with the iconic Hawa Mahal appearing almost otherworldly. City bazaars like Johri, Nehru, and Bapu are brimming with traditional Rajasthani cuisine and enthusiastic shoppers.

Dive in. Embrace the chaos, the colors, and the camaraderie – there's truly nothing like it.

11. Old Bagan, Burma (Myanmar)

• Why visit in November? Experience one of the world's most breathtaking sunsets.

As the crisp November breezes sweep through Southeast Asia, temperatures drop from scorching to pleasantly warm, and humidity lessens. This shift brings the continent's most remarkable landmarks into stunning focus – especially in Bagan.

Arrive in Yangon and take a quick domestic flight (or opt for a longer train or bus ride) to Old Bagan. Once the ancient capital of modern Burma, this area boasts around 10,000 temples constructed between the 9th and 13th centuries, many of which remain as a sprawling UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among all the man-made landscapes I've encountered globally, none captivates like this.

Hop on an electric scooter, grab a classic paper map, and start your adventure. There are thousands of temples, pagodas, and monuments waiting to be discovered. Many are open for entry and climbing – the best spots for those coveted sunrise and sunset photos are highly sought after. For an unforgettable experience, take a ride in a hot air balloon.

12. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

• Why visit in November? To savor its unique blend of Asian cuisines.

Similar to Fukuoka in Japan, Malaysia's lively capital is finally receiving international acclaim for its incredible street food. Visit the food court at Lot 10 Hutong and the sensory delights of Petaling Street and Jalan Alor. The vibrant mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian dishes served at street stalls creates a culinary haven. When evening falls, head to the chic speakeasies and stylish restaurants of Changkat Bukit Bintang.

And of course, there's the Petronas Towers. Once hailed as the tallest buildings in the world, they dominate the skyline. While exploring them is enjoyable, I found the experience slightly underwhelming. The view of the towers from the WET Deck at W Kuala Lumpur is truly breathtaking.
