Chaul Chnam Thmey is the name of the Cambodian New Year. Its origins lie in a tale where Dhammabal Koma, a clever young boy, is challenged by Kabil Moha Prum, the god-king, to solve a riddle. A dangerous wager is made: the loser must forfeit his head.

When the king failed to solve the puzzle, he kept his word, and his daughters carried his head to Someru Mountain. This act eventually became an annual ritual.

During each Cambodian New Year, one of the king's daughters descends with the king’s head, bringing blessings of joy, favorable weather, and hopes for a bountiful harvest.

Cambodian New Year 2023

Choul Chnam Thmey takes place annually from April 13 or 14 to April 16, marking the end of the harvest season. It’s a time when farmers and fishermen rest, and many people return to their hometowns to celebrate with their families.

Maha Songkran

Virak Wanabat is the second day of the New Year, where people extend help to those in need, including low-income families, servants, the homeless, and the poor.

Virak Loeurng Sak

T'ngai Leang Saka is the third day of the New Year celebration, where Buddhists cleanse Buddha statues and pay respects to their elders by gently sprinkling water.
