Copenhagen continues to shine as, for the second consecutive year, a restaurant in the Danish capital takes the crown as the best dining establishment in the world at the prestigious World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards.
Geranium offers a unique, plant-based Scandinavian menu, crafted from seasonal ingredients, all served in the striking setting of Denmark’s national soccer stadium on its eighth floor. The restaurant operates just four days a week, a decision made by head chef Rasmus Kofoed and co-owner Søren Ledet to maintain a balanced work-life philosophy.
The two founders embraced with joy after celebrating their victory at a lavish ceremony held on Monday night at London’s Old Billingsgate, a historic venue once home to the world’s largest fish market. Hollywood actor and Dinogo host Stanley Tucci dazzled the crowd, wearing a white tuxedo jacket on the UK’s hottest day of the year.
Restaurants can only claim the top honor once, after which they are inducted into the prestigious 'Best of the Best' category. This exclusive group includes Geranium's neighbor, Noma, as well as New York's Eleven Madison Park, The Fat Duck near London, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, and France's Mirazur in Menton.
The rest of the rankings.
South American restaurants also performed impressively. In Lima, chefs Virgilio Martínez and Pía León's Central moved up two spots to claim second place, while Maido, known for its Japanese-Peruvian fusion, dropped to 11th.
Brazil’s A Casa do Porco, a tribute to all things pork, surged 10 positions to reach No. 7.
Spain also made a strong showing this year. Barcelona's Disfrutar held onto No. 3, Madrid’s Diverxo soared to No. 4, while Larrabetzu's Asador Etxebarri, where every dish is grilled over an open flame – even dessert – slipped to No. 6.
Mexico City had a strong presence with Pujol, ranked No. 5 and named North America's Best Restaurant, and Quintonil, which made a remarkable leap from No. 27 last year to No. 9 this year.
Italy’s Lido 84 and Le Calandre also saw a rise in the rankings this year. Meanwhile, Uliassi, located in the Senigallia region, earned the title of this year's Highest New Entry at No. 12.
It isn't until No. 20 that an Asian restaurant appears, with Den in Tokyo securing the highest rank among Asian establishments on this year's list.
Over the 20 years the awards have existed, no restaurant from outside Europe or North America has ever won the World’s 50 Best prize. All the winners so far have hailed from Spain, the US, the UK, Denmark, Italy, and France.
