This Mexican City Offers Retirement for Less Than $1,000 a Month, According to a Recent Study
Retirement should be all about enjoying your golden years in style, which means basking in sun and fun. That’s why over 60,000 Americans, as reported by the Social Security Administration, opt to retire in Mexico. But with such a vast country, where should future retirees focus their search? GoBankingRates has investigated small towns across Mexico to find out.
“Mexico is rich in sunshine, culture, and globally loved cuisine,” noted GoBankingRates in its report. “But perhaps the best aspect for retirees is its affordability.”
GoBankingRates aimed to identify the 10 top retirement destinations in Mexico where living expenses are under $2,500 a month. The analysis involved studying the cost of living across various cities using data from Numbeo Cost of Living. To be included in the analysis, cities needed to provide comprehensive data for accurate calculations, covering expenses like dining, groceries, housing, transport, clothing, utilities, and leisure activities. Rent calculations factored in the costs for one-bedroom apartments in city centers and outlying areas, as well as three-bedroom homes in similar locations.
Jeremy Woodhouse/Getty ImagesAfter reviewing the data, the study identified Aguascalientes, situated in central Mexico, as the most budget-friendly option.
“Aguascalientes boasts low expenses overall, but it particularly excels in one-bedroom rental prices outside the city center and three-bedroom rentals within,” the report stated. “With monthly rates of just $169.81 and $384.31, respectively, Aguascalientes offers the lowest costs among all cities examined in these categories.”
The analysis revealed that a single person's average monthly expenses in the city, including rent, amount to just $861.59, dropping to $583 without rent.
For other attractive retirement destinations, consider Ensenada, Veracruz, Puebla, Saltillo, Querétaro, Tijuana, Playa del Carmen, La Paz, and Mazatlán, all of which made the list. To explore all the findings and available data, visit gobankingrates.com.
