Top 10 Christmas Markets in Europe for 2024
Few places evoke the spirit of the season quite like the finest Christmas markets in Europe. With the aroma of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts and the sounds of Christmas carols, these markets are bound to spread holiday cheer for all ages.
Many of the oldest and most genuine Christmas markets can be found in Germany. Their charm has now influenced markets across Europe, even extending to warmer regions. However, the most enchanting ones remain in northern and central Europe, which is the focus of this guide.
Advice for exploring European Christmas markets
Although many markets operate for over a month, they tend to get quite crowded. Plan your visit for midweek to enjoy a (slightly) more peaceful experience—especially beneficial if you have children.
Visiting Europe’s top Christmas markets involves plenty of walking, exploring stalls, and enjoying performances. Central Europe can get quite chilly after dark, so be prepared for colder temperatures and pack accordingly.
There are two essentials I never leave home without when heading to a Christmas market. Cash is crucial, especially in Germany, where many vendors do not accept card payments. I also recommend bringing wet wipes—mulled wine can be quite sticky, and spills are inevitable!

Held in Munich’s bustling Marienplatz, this market has been celebrated since Medieval times, brimming with ambiance and authenticity. The stunning neo-Gothic town hall serves as a breathtaking backdrop, especially from Sunday to Thursday evenings when Bavarian bands perform from its balcony for the captivated crowds below.
Amid the lively market stalls, there are plenty of activities to enjoy. Children can create their own gifts in the town hall workshops, while adults can savor glühwein and feuerzangenbowle, also known as “fire tongs punch.”
When it comes to cuisine, be sure to sample local delights like Lebkuchen (a spiced biscuit), magenbrot (gingerbread), or the classic wurst (sausage) served with mustard, followed by a delectable plum cake. Make your way to the foyer of Michaelskirche around 5 PM to enjoy German advent carols.

- Don’t miss: The Lantern Procession leading up to Nuremberg Castle is a delightful Christmas spectacle, perfect for both children and adults.
Nestled between Frankfurt and Munich, Nuremberg is home to one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world. Known as “the little city of wood and cloth,” it features nearly 200 wooden stalls with cheerful red-and-white striped canopies. Throughout December, Nuremberg’s Hauptmarkt (main market) Square transforms into a magical festive scene.
In addition to its handcrafted ornaments and gifts, the Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt boasts some delightful quirks. Among the most unique is the beloved Zwetschgenmännle—figurines fashioned from dried prunes, dressed to resemble everyone from a pastor to the devil. Be sure to grab a chimney sweep for good fortune in the year ahead.
While food is central to every German Christmas market, it holds a special place here. The legendary bratwurst sausage can be traced back to Nuremberg as early as 1313, making it a must-try. Don't miss out on the sweet and delectable spekulatius almond cookies, either.
There are fantastic self-guided tours in English available to uncover its hidden gems. If you're visiting with family, make sure your kids experience the Kinderweihnacht festivities on Hans-Sachs-Platz.

I might be a bit biased, but my favorite local Christmas market, Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom, is truly among the best. Nestled beneath the towering twin spires of Cologne’s magnificent cathedral—Germany’s most popular tourist spot—it’s brimming with history and charm. The market is alive with music from live performances on the central stage.
At its center, a towering Christmas tree commands attention among the 150 stalls. From its base, a vast web of shimmering lights spreads outwards, casting a warm holiday glow across Roncalliplatz. The stalls are filled with handcrafted treasures made from wood, glass, and ceramics.
You'll notice a strong commitment to sustainability here—Cologne’s market was the first in Germany to earn an ISO certification for eco-friendliness, with little to no disposable plastic in sight. But indulgence remains a theme, as the enticing scents of glühwein and melting cheese fill the air (the Swiss raclette stand is always a must-try).
Keep in mind, this is just one of the many enchanting Christmas markets throughout the city. Don’t miss the magical Markt der Engel, the beloved local spot at Stadtgarten, and enjoy some ice skating at Heumarkt.
The finest Christmas markets across Europe

The Wiener Christkindlsmarkt ranks among Europe's largest and most enduring Christmas markets. This rich history is palpable at every stall, complemented by the stunning architecture surrounding Rathausplatz.
Boasting over 150 stalls, this market is a celebration of local craftsmanship and produce. Explore winter apparel, jewelry, toys, and twinkling Christmas decorations. Indulge in local treats such as roast goose paired with punch (with or without rum). For a sweet delight, the ground almond vanillekipferl biscuits are a must-try.

Kids will find plenty to enjoy as well. A free children's ice rink offers a magical experience, while a vintage Ferris wheel provides beautiful views of the market. Additionally, a giant advent calendar surprises visitors with daily prizes.

As you enter the Valkenburg Market at the base of Cauberg Hill, you’re greeted by a quintessential Christmas atmosphere. Sparkling stalls feature vendors offering handmade ornaments and gifts. It’s enchanting, but the real wonder lies underground.
A maze of tunnels in the Gemeentegrot and Fluweelengrot quarries hosts Europe's largest underground Christmas market. (I can't help but wonder how many contenders there are for that title!) Illuminated festive sculptures and fir trees guide visitors, revealing miners' original drawings on the tunnel walls.
Stalls line the winding paths selling a variety of goods. As you venture deeper, the caves become increasingly vast and breathtaking. The Gemeentegrot, in particular, features enormous caverns. Fly into Maastricht, and it’s just a 20-minute drive to Christmas Town.

You won't even need to remove your skates at the Ice Bar, and Lisebergs Wärdshus offers a menu featuring regional, seasonal, and organic local dishes. It’s not just a holiday for the kids after all.
As Gothenburg is recognized as the world’s most sustainable city, it’s fitting that its five million market lights are powered by Liseberg’s wind turbine. Intrigued? Discover more activities to enjoy this winter in Sweden.

Follow the decorations to reach the Grand Christmas Tree, where a choir of musical angels guides you to Cathedral Square.
The size of the market effectively reduces congestion, offering ample space for exploration. As is customary at Christmas markets, local artisan goods take precedence. - Don’t miss: A visit to the nearby market at Wenceslas Square
Prague boasts two enchanting Christmas markets located in Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, just a ten-minute stroll apart, making it easy to enjoy both in one delightfully festive evening.
Begin your journey at the stunning Old Town Market. On one side, admire the gothic spires of the Church of Our Lady before Týn, and on the other, the remarkable 15th-century astronomical clock. It’s a beautiful scene, illuminated by the shimmering glow of Christmas lights, the majestic Christmas tree, and often, a blanket of snow.
Among the market stalls and local crafts (yes, sword making is part of the experience), there's much to savor. The enticing scent of cinnamon wafts from large vats of 'svarak', the regional version of mulled wine. Enjoy it alongside local delicacies like cheesy breads, hearty sausages, or sweet 'trdelnik' pastries.
