1. Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao

Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are commonly referred to as the ABC islands. While they share a Dutch heritage, each island has developed its own unique identity—except for their stunningly beautiful beaches, which they all boast.

February marks the height of the Caribbean season, with all three islands enjoying sunny skies and warm beach temperatures. The biggest celebrations occur in Aruba, especially during Carnival month. Join the festivities in Oranjestad and Palm Beach for vibrant parades and lively parties. 

With more sandy shores than its rockier counterparts, Curaçao is the largest island and boasts the most beaches. Discover stunning cliffs, idyllic coves, and vibrant Caribbean waters at spots like Grote Knip, Klein Knip, and Playa Lagun.

My top choice is Bonaire. This lesser-known gem offers unmatched diving and a breathtaking reef just a stone's throw from the shore. Watersports are a way of life here, and with over 400 caves, the island is a dream destination for spelunkers.

2. Raglan, New Zealand

As a lifelong surfer, I had a photo of the iconic Raglan wave on my wall for 15 years. When I finally visited, it exceeded my expectations. Warm and welcoming yet strikingly beautiful, this landscape is a true New Zealand treasure. 

February is perfect for exploring the stunning coastline of the Waikato region on North Island. Expect daytime temperatures in the mid-70s, with water temperatures around the mid-60s, and plenty of sunshine. The main surf break is at Manu Bay, where waves can stretch an impressive 330 yards along the coast. Beginners should check out the striking black sands of nearby Ngarunui Beach.

Once you've had your fill of surfing, venture into the relaxed atmosphere of Raglan, the quintessential surf town. You'll find lively bars, delightful home-cooking spots, charming inns, and a vibrant art scene, all just a two-hour drive from Auckland. 

3. Loreto, Mexico

Embark on a road trip down the Baja peninsula, where you'll find yourself alone with vast cactus fields stretching for miles. Amid this arid landscape, Loreto stands out as one of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos, or Magical Towns. 

Known for its beautiful colonial architecture and rich cultural heritage, Loreto's cobbled streets transport you to a bygone era. The 17th-century Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto, alongside pottery shops and friendly locals, create a timeless atmosphere. Yet, within this charm, you'll discover boutique hotels, delightful family-run eateries, and a vibrant modern vibe.

The real magic of Loreto lies offshore. The unspoiled islands of the Parque Nacional Bahía de Loreto are a haven for nature lovers. Desolate beaches line an ocean that in February buzzes with whales drawn to feed, mate, and calve. 

4. Arabian Desert, Saudi Arabia

Spanning much of the Arabian Peninsula, the vast expanse of red sand in the Arabian Desert is characterized by extreme temperatures, towering dunes, rich Bedouin culture, and diverse wildlife. February marks winter, offering daytime temperatures in the mid-70s and more pleasant conditions. 

Located a few hours southwest of Riyadh, Al Kharrarah National Park serves as an adventure hub. Here, you can trace the footsteps of ancient Egyptians who surfed and transported goods using sandboards and sleds. Local guides are available to lead you to untouched dunes, allowing you to be the first to leave your mark in the sand.

With a bit of luck, winter rains can transform this region into a temporary oasis. Water cascading down steep dunes creates a short-lived waterfall and the Lake of Liquid Light, deep enough for swimming. For a brief moment, it might just be the best beach on the planet.

Fortunately, numerous spots across the US bask in winter sunshine, boasting temperatures ideal for enjoying the great outdoors.

5. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Once the go-to destination for lively spring breakers on the East Coast, Fort Lauderdale has matured. It’s now celebrated for its stunning beaches and boating canals, upscale shopping, and exquisite dining. With February temperatures in Florida often reaching the high 70s, it has evolved into a top-tier winter getaway.

Bask in the sun along Florida’s 23 miles of golden sandy beaches. Relax under the gently swaying palms and bright blue skies at Las Olas Beach, situated right in the midst of all the excitement. Behind you, Las Olas Boulevard stretches like a vein through the canals and into the heart of the city.

Board a riverboat to glide through the canals while savoring Champagne, then step off among the stylish boutiques and gleaming hotels lining Las Olas Boulevard. To wrap up your day, indulge in the abundant sea-to-table dining options brimming with fresh seafood and Floribbean zest.

6. O‘ahu, Hawai‘i

O‘ahu, with its tropical and temperate climate, promises a wonderfully warm getaway in February. As the gateway to Hawaii from the mainland, it boasts clear skies and shimmering seas. Average high temperatures stay above 70, making the beaches and hiking trails absolutely inviting.

Begin your adventure in the capital, Honolulu. This vibrant city combines metropolitan excitement with island charm, offering a unique blend of hustle and relaxation. However, O‘ahu truly dazzles in its natural landscapes. The sunrise views from the Makapu‘u Lighthouse Trail are simply unmatched, part of over 200 trails crisscrossing the island.

And then there are the beaches. While Waikiki is well-known, it's the legendary North Shore that captures the spotlight. Renowned for some of the best surfing waves in the world, winter brings massive swells that create a spectacle for both surfers and spectators. Spread out your towel, kick back, and enjoy the view.

7. Tucson, Arizona

While an average of 55 might not seem warm, Tucson, with average highs of 69 and minimal rainfall, is a hiker's paradise in February.

Arizona's second-largest city is surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes. Venture in any direction, and you'll discover extraordinary scenery. For a quick scenic stroll, the Sabino Canyons are an excellent choice, but my favorite is about an hour south in the stunning Elephant Head region.

A massive granite peak, traversed by the well-trodden East Ridge trail, offers stunning views of the Santa Rita Mountains to the east. Begin your journey at Chino Canyon for a challenging hike that takes you past the ruins of Old Elephant Head Mill and the remnants of Quantrell Mine. At the summit, the fascinating Elephant Shrine is framed by the distant Baboquivari Peak, creating a magical sight.

8. Easter Island, Chile

Up for a long-haul journey? Nestled in the South Pacific, Easter Island enjoys warm summer temperatures in February. It's the perfect time to escape the daily grind and explore one of the most enchanting islands on Earth.

Begin your adventure with the moai statues, 887 enormous rock figures famously known as the Easter Island heads. Hike the Ara O Te Moai ancestral path to discover toppled heads and the Rano Raraku volcano, the site of their quarry. Witnessing them in their original setting is even more intriguing given the mystery surrounding how the Rapanui people transported them.

For a distinctive experience, consider a guided dive to explore the underwater moai near Hanga Roa. There are fantastic diving, snorkeling, and surfing opportunities around the coast, particularly at the beautiful white-sand beach of Anakena.  

9. Conil de la Frontera, Spain

In Andalucía, located in Spain’s southernmost region, the beaches are more untamed and the cities steeped in history. Cádiz, Europe’s oldest city, offers a glimpse into 3,000 years of fascinating history. Further south, the town of Conil cascades down cliffs to meet the beach, resembling a white wave crashing into the Atlantic.

It has become my go-to European beach getaway as it’s an excellent spot to bask in the sun, even during winter. February might not be sweltering, but with typically sunny skies, it always feels pleasantly warm. 

Instead of lounging in the sun, dive into the action. Close by, El Palmar is a sprawling surf haven with a vibrant and welcoming beachfront community. Here, you’ll find surf schools and camps, lively bars equipped with skate ramps, and local ‘cervecerias’ serving 2€ cañas alongside delicious tapas. Few experiences rival ending your day with a sunset horseback ride along the beach.

10. Phnom Penh, Cambodia

While still flying under the radar compared to other Southeast Asian capitals like Bangkok and Hanoi, Cambodia’s capital is a hidden gem. In February, it basks in clear skies, with minimal rainfall and humidity making it an ideal time to visit.

A trip to the city must confront the harrowing legacy of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. Visiting Choeung Ek, known as the Killing Fields, provides a poignant and informative experience, more impactful than the stark realities of the Tuol Sleng Museum.

However, Phnom Penh offers so much more beyond its somber past. Experience the allure of royalty and Hollywood legends with a stay at the historic Raffles Hotel Le Royal. Enjoy exquisite Khmer dishes (though you might want to skip the fried tarantula) at Romdeng restaurant, a non-profit where underprivileged Cambodian youths receive hospitality training.

Don't overlook the majestic Mekong, my favorite river teeming with vibrant life. As Southeast Asia's lifeblood, consider extending your adventure with a three-day cruise that leads into Vietnam and the enchanting Ho Chi Minh City.
