How the Voting Process Works
Annually, for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L invites readers to share their travel experiences worldwide—expressing their views on the best hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise lines, spas, airlines, and more. In 2024, over 186,000 T+L readers participated in the survey, casting more than 700,000 votes across 8,700+ properties (including hotels, cities, and cruise lines).
Cities were rated based on the following criteria:
- Attractions/landmarks
- Cultural experiences
- Culinary delights
- Welcoming atmosphere
- Retail opportunities
- Affordability
Respondents rated each aspect as excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The overall scores are calculated as the averages of these ratings.
Highlights from Readers
For numerous readers, the allure of the Mediterranean remains enchanting, which explains why this year's list includes six cities from Spain—an increase of four from last year. Welcome back, Marbella (No. 4) and Granada (No. 13)! Last year, Porto and Lisbon represented Portugal; this year, Funchal has soared to the second position. While Istanbul (No. 5) has lost its top ranking to Florence, Turkey still shines as Bodrum enters the list at No. 15.
Despite climate change causing hotter summers in Southern Europe, readers are reluctant to forsake their love for the warmer regions of the continent. Edinburgh holds steady at No. 12, remaining the only European city in the top 15 north of the Alps. Unfortunately, Paris and London will have to wait for another year to make a comeback.
