Top Dog-friendly Hotels Across the U.S.
Gone are the days of settling for dingy roadside motels when traveling with your dog. Nowadays, hotels across all price ranges embrace pet-friendly policies, not just allowing dogs but also treating them as well as their human companions.
At the Bobby Hotel in Nashville and The St. Regis Aspen Resort, a resident dog oversees the lobbies. Meanwhile, La Posada de Santa Fe in New Mexico and Baron's Cove in Sag Harbor, New York, welcome pups with local goodies and private, fenced outdoor spaces ideal for play. At L'Auberge de Sedona in Arizona, dogs can relax by the fire in a cozy bed after a day of exploring by the creek.
My golden retriever, Cali, spent much of her early life at the Dinogo office. So, when we embarked on a cross-country road trip, I figured it was the perfect opportunity to put her to work. While she can't write a review, I’m sure she’d concur with my thoughts that certain features elevate the best dog-friendly hotels above the rest:
- Close proximity to parks and dog-friendly activities
- Accessible outdoor areas — extra points if they're fenced and allow free roaming
- Home-like amenities, such as a dog bed, water bowl, or treats and toys upon arrival
- On-site or nearby dog-friendly dining options
- A bathtub (or ideally, an outdoor shower) for when adventures get messy
- A staff that loves pets
Cali personally tested (and, from my observations, thoroughly approved of) many of the hotels on our list. I discovered that if you're fortunate enough to have a well-traveling dog, bringing them along can greatly enhance your vacation. Traveling with a pet provides a natural reason to engage with locals, encourages more outdoor exploration, and guarantees enthusiastic greetings and adorable photos wherever you go.
Keep in mind that some hotels may charge extra fees or deposits, reserve specific rooms for pet owners, or provide seasonal pet packages. It's always wise to call ahead if you're checking in with a furry friend. Generally, hotels don’t permit pets to be left alone, so plan for pet-friendly activities accordingly. If leaving your pet unattended is allowed, consider taking a pet camera to monitor your furry travel buddy.
Here are Cali's (and my) top recommendations for the best dog-friendly accommodations in the U.S.
Baron’s Cove: Sag Harbor, NY
Nina RuggieroAuthor John Steinbeck frequented this charming waterfront retreat on Long Island. Guests who opt for the Travels With Charley package will receive a copy of his novel about his cross-country adventure with a French poodle, "Travels with Charley: In Search of America"—ideal for enjoying on your private fenced porch while your pup plays freely. This package also includes treats, a frisbee, a bed, and a daily dining credit for humans. Winter is the best time to visit Baron's Cove with your dog, as Sag Harbor is less crowded, allowing you to relax by the fire with a glass of wine and some water for your furry friend, while gazing out at the tranquil harbor. South Fork beaches are typically dog-friendly all day in winter, with Havens Beach being the closest (dogs are not allowed from Memorial Day to Labor Day), and Montauk Brewery is a fun dog-friendly stop just half an hour to the east.
