Searching for the quintessential, laid-back Southeast Asia backpacking adventure? Make your way to Vang Vieng. This charming town in central Laos has been attracting young adventurers for almost twenty years. In the past, the excitement revolved around the Song River, a hub for riverside parties and thrilling swings. However, following a crackdown in 2012, authorities curtailed these risky activities and the loud music. Tubing along the Song is still a must-do in Vang Vieng, but the atmosphere has shifted to one of enjoying nature rather than nursing hangovers. Visitors can also try rock climbing, take a hot-air balloon ride, discover secret swimming spots, enroll in a cooking class, or explore the many caves in the area. The options are varied and much more relaxed, while the town continues to offer affordable accommodation and a vibrant bar scene for forging lifelong friendships.

Reaching New Zealand typically involves a lengthy journey. Its remote charm, known as the “Land Of The Long White Cloud,” is part of its appeal, but planning a crossing of the Pacific isn’t something done overnight. However, embarking on a long-term adventure in New Zealand can be straightforward and budget-friendly—if you're willing to put in some effort. The working holiday visa program enables individuals under 30 (and in some cases, up to 35) from 45 countries to live and work in New Zealand for up to a year, allowing you to fund an extended stay in Aotearoa by taking on seasonal jobs. A wide network of independently-run BBH and YHA hostels makes it easy to explore and meet new people affordably, while you can also gain new skills at various organic farms participating in the WWOOF program in exchange for accommodation. Whether you're eager to conquer the 10 Great Walks that traverse New Zealand's stunningly remote islands or prefer the vibrancy of cities like Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch, experiencing New Zealand is a unique adventure that you will cherish.

Ignite your adventurous spirit in Alaska, where the nearly endless summer daylight offers plenty of opportunities for exploration. Take a float plane ride to witness brown bears fishing in Katmai National Park and Preserve or to admire the dramatic glaciers of Prince William Sound. After an exhilarating road trip to the quaint former mining town of McCarthy, try your hand at climbing the ice on Root Glacier in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. Kayak in the tranquil waters of Resurrection Bay near Seward, where you might encounter otters, humpback whales, orcas, and seals, whether for a few hours or a few days. At night, unwind in a cozy public-use cabin or a remote resort before heading back to Seward for a delicious meal and a drink. Drive north from Anchorage to Denali National Park and Preserve, set up your campsite, and see if you can spot the “Big Five” of this famed park: moose, bears, wolves, Dall sheep, and caribou. For a different experience, take a ferry with the Alaska Marine Highway System to Unalaska-Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands, where you'll find a rich blend of Alaska Native culture, World War II history, and the fishing industry, with hiking trails, museums, and historical sites all around you.

Embrace adventure during the day with rainforest hikes, waterfall swims, thrilling whitewater runs, or epic surfing sessions. As the sun sets, unwind at laidback beach bars or dance the night away in San José nightclubs. With its round-the-clock excitement, Costa Rica is an ideal destination for travelers in their twenties. Even beginners can participate in outdoor adventures thanks to accessible tours and lessons, while seasoned adventurers will find plenty of challenges. What makes Costa Rica particularly enticing for young travelers is not just its vast array of activities but also its safe, friendly, and easy-to-navigate environment. Although it’s not the most budget-friendly option in Central America, it remains more affordable than places in North America, Europe, or the Caribbean. The tourist infrastructure is solid, with many locals speaking English and eager to assist.

With a wealth of affordable experiences, Bulgaria offers an adventure that fills your travel journal. Never skied before? No worries. Bansko features beginner-friendly slopes perfect for learning, and communal chalets like Snomads provide a cozy atmosphere near the charming Old Town, swapping pricey après-ski for local taverns where new friendships are made. After a day on the slopes, unwind in one of the many hot springs—much cheaper than what you'd find in Iceland. Looking for a unique hostel experience? Check out Rila Monastery, an ornately frescoed Orthodox site surrounded by mountains, where you can sleep in a monastic cell alongside the resident monks. Ready to hit the nightlife? Sofia boasts a vibrant scene, starting with a Soviet-era speakeasy like the atmospheric Hambara, followed by energetic techno beats at iconic clubs like Yalta and EXE. Travel is easy on the wallet, too; even the longest train journey from Sofia to the coastal city of Varna is under US$15. Plus, with excellent hostels along the Black Sea, a beach getaway is always within reach.
Take in the breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia's picturesque wine country. lovingav / Getty ImagesVirginia’s wine country

As a twentysomething, I can tell you there’s nothing better than winery-hopping with friends under the sun. While there are many lavish destinations for the ultimate wine-themed getaway, my crew loves heading to Virginia to sip exquisite wines with the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains as our backdrop. Recently, we explored the Shenandoah Valley, where options abound. Local favorites include Ecco Adesso (great for large groups), Rockbridge, and Jump Mountain vineyards. If you’re up for a drive north towards Charlottesville, Pippin Hill and King Family Vineyards offer polo matches alongside your wine. If beer is more your style, Devil’s Backbone is a top choice, with a main base in Roseland and locations in Lexington and Charlottesville. At the end of the day, you can cozy up in a charming inn or a small-town hotel, and sometimes, you won’t even need to leave the vineyard grounds.
