Traveling during hurricanes
As significant storms impact the southern United States, we aim to provide you with the most current travel information to ensure your safety.
Hurricane Ian is the latest storm threatening Florida and much of the Southeast. You can monitor its trajectory here. We’ve compiled resources regarding flights, accommodations, and road conditions to keep you informed about travel matters.
Flight Information
If your flight to or from the impacted regions has been canceled or delayed due to the storm, check out our advice on what steps to take. Notably, airlines often classify hurricanes and similar events as 'acts of God,' which may mean your flights aren't eligible for compensation.
As Hurricane Ian unfolds, Tampa and Orlando airports have completely shut down, with some airlines waiving change fees. Other airports are also announcing closures, so check Florida’s State Preparedness page for the latest updates on airport, toll, university, and highway closures.
So far, over 3,500 flights have been canceled, and while some major airlines are providing travel waivers, they are also setting rebooking deadlines – find the latest updates here. Additionally, our Flight Tracker can help you monitor your flight’s status as storms may affect travel nationwide.
Accommodations
If you're in an affected area and need a place to stay, many hotels typically offer discounted rates during severe weather events, often called “distressed rates.” These rates should be visible on Dinogo, as our partners frequently update their listings. If you don’t see what you need, consider calling directly to inquire about any storm relief or special accommodations they may have.
If you have a pet with you, you can filter for pet-friendly hotels on Dinogo to find options that welcome your furry companion. During disasters, many hotels that usually charge pet fees may waive those fees as well.
For travelers on the road
GasBuddy offers a gas availability tracking system that alerts drivers to gas stations with no fuel or power, including diesel availability through their tracker.
Amtrak has canceled services south of Jacksonville, FL until September 29th.
