Understanding Marriott elite status: What it entails and how to attain it

Marriott Bonvoy serves as the loyalty program for more than 30 hotel brands, boasting nearly 8,900 properties across 141 countries and regions. Holding Marriott elite status grants you additional benefits during your stays at these hotels.
For frequent travelers, Marriott elite status can offer significant value. Here’s what you need to know about Marriott elite status, including its top benefits and how to achieve it.
What does Marriott elite status mean?
With Marriott elite status, you gain added advantages when booking stays at Marriott hotels. As a member of Marriott Bonvoy, you begin your journey, and Marriott provides five tiers of elite status that can be earned through nights stayed—and for the highest tier, through spending with Marriott Bonvoy—within a single calendar year.
Keep enhancing your knowledge on maximizing points and miles by subscribing to our daily newsletter.

You will have the full calendar year to accumulate elite night credits and qualifying dollars if you're aiming for the highest tier of Marriott Bonvoy status. Achieving a particular Marriott elite status allows you to maintain that status until the end of the subsequent February. Additionally, you will receive Marriott Annual Choice Benefits after earning 50 and 75 elite night credits in a calendar year.
Tiers of Marriott elite status
Marriott Bonvoy offers five tiers of elite status that you can achieve as outlined below:
- Silver Elite: Requires 10 elite night credits each calendar year
- Gold Elite: Requires 25 elite night credits each calendar year
- Platinum Elite: Requires 50 elite night credits each calendar year
- Titanium Elite: Requires 75 elite night credits each calendar year
- Ambassador Elite: Requires 100 elite night credits and a minimum of $23,000 in qualifying spending each calendar year
Alongside these tiers, you can also attain lifetime elite status with Marriott Bonvoy. While it's no longer possible to achieve lifetime Titanium Elite status, you can earn other lifetime Marriott statuses as detailed below:
- Lifetime Silver Elite: Requires 250 nights and five years as Silver Elite or higher
- Lifetime Gold Elite: Requires 400 nights and seven years as Gold Elite or higher
- Lifetime Platinum Elite: Requires 600 nights and ten years as Platinum Elite or higher
Earning lifetime status can be a lengthy process, requiring many nights spent with Marriott. However, achieving this status allows you to continue enjoying benefits during stays, even if you don't stay frequently enough to maintain Marriott elite status each calendar year.
How to achieve Marriott elite status
You can achieve Marriott elite status by collecting elite night credits, and for Ambassador Elite, through qualifying spending, each calendar year. However, both your elite night credits and qualifying spending reset to zero at the end of every calendar year.
Elite night credits
Here’s how your stays at Marriott properties contribute to earning elite night credits toward your status:
- Protea Hotels, City Express, and Four Points Express: Earn one elite night credit for every two qualifying nights stayed during your visit
- Marriott Executive Apartments: Earn one elite night credit for every three qualifying nights stayed during your visit
- Most other Marriott properties: Earn one elite night credit for each qualifying night stayed
For brands and properties where you earn elite night credits only after two or three qualifying nights, partial credits are not awarded. Therefore, two separate three-night stays at Protea Hotels would yield only two elite night credits, as each stay earns just one credit.

You can also accumulate elite night credits by hosting a qualifying event at a participating Marriott Bonvoy location. Specifically, you will earn one elite night credit for every 20 room nights booked and occupied, with a maximum of 20 elite night credits available per event contract. Additionally, elite night credits can be earned through Marriott Bonvoy credit cards, which I will cover later.
However, even if you reserve multiple rooms for a single night, elite night credits will only be granted for one room in which you actually stay. You must personally pay for that room or be assigned to a room that is directly billed to your company, excluding those booked as part of a convention or group meeting. Unfortunately, contract rooms, rooms booked by your corporation on a regular basis, and master-billed rooms are not eligible for elite night credits.
Qualifying spending for Ambassador Elite status
Ambassador Elite is the highest tier of Marriott Bonvoy status, and it is the only level that has a qualifying spending requirement. To achieve Ambassador Elite status, you need to earn 100 elite night credits and spend at least $23,000 in qualified expenses each calendar year.
You might be surprised at how few expenses actually count as qualifying spending. According to the Marriott Bonvoy terms and conditions, qualifying spending only includes charges from stays completed during the qualifying period. Therefore, you cannot increase your qualifying spending by prepaying for stays in future qualifying years, incurring charges on the property without staying, or using cobranded Marriott Bonvoy cards for expenses.
Benefits of Marriott elite status
Now that you understand how to achieve Marriott elite status, let's explore the top benefits that come with it. In this section, we will detail each benefit and how it differs by tier.
Bonus points
Bonvoy members earn 10 base points for every dollar spent on qualifying charges at most Marriott brands. However, at Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, Protea Hotels, City Express, Four Points Express, Element, Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites, and Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy properties, you will only earn 5 base points per dollar spent. Additionally, Marriott Executive Apartments yield only 2.5 base points per dollar spent.

Additionally, members with Marriott elite status receive bonus points based on their base points as follows:
- Silver Elite: 10% bonus
- Gold Elite: 25% bonus
- Platinum Elite: 50% bonus
- Titanium Elite: 75% bonus
- Ambassador Elite: 75% bonus
Welcome gift
As a Gold Elite member, you'll receive a welcome gift of points during each stay at participating Marriott brands. Typically, this is 500 points per stay at most brands. However, City Express does not offer a welcome gift of points, and at Courtyard, Four Points, SpringHill Suites, Protea Hotels, Fairfield, AC Hotels, Aloft, Moxy, Four Points Express, Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites, and Element, you will only receive 250 points per stay.

Members with Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status and above receive a welcome gift at participating Marriott brands, except for City Express locations that are not City Centro. Platinum Elite members and above can select their welcome gift at most brands. Options vary by brand and region, potentially including a food-and-beverage credit, breakfast, points, and special amenities. It's advisable to check the table in Section 4.3.c.iii of the Marriott Bonvoy terms and conditions to view your welcome gift choices before checking in.
Room upgrades
Gold Elite members and higher qualify for complimentary room upgrades, depending on availability as determined by participating Marriott properties upon check-in.
Gold Elite members may enjoy enhanced room options, which can include accommodations on higher floors, those with great views, corner rooms, and rooms on Executive floors. However, Gold Elite members are not eligible for upgrades to rooms with direct access to club lounges at The Ritz-Carlton.

In addition to the complimentary upgrades available to Gold Elite members, Platinum Elite members and those at higher tiers may also receive suite upgrades—though at Ritz-Carlton properties, suite upgrades are generally reserved for Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite members.
Regardless of your Marriott Bonvoy tier, be aware that Marriott Vacation Club; Marriott Grand Residence Club; Sheraton Vacation Club; Westin Vacation Club; The Phoenician Residences, a Luxury Collection Residence Club, Scottsdale; and Ritz-Carlton Reserve do not offer the complimentary room upgrades included in the Marriott Bonvoy program.
Lounge access
Platinum Elite members and higher are entitled to lounge access along with one guest staying in the same room at participating properties including JW Marriott, Marriott Hotels, Sheraton, Delta Hotels, Le Meridien, Westin, Autograph Collection, and Renaissance Hotels that feature a lounge. Note that lounge access is available at resort locations for Sheraton, Le Meridien, and Westin, as well as at Courtyard properties outside the U.S. and Canada when a lounge is present.
Late checkout
If you hold Marriott elite status, you might qualify for complimentary late checkout. However, certain brands do not offer this benefit, including Marriott Vacation Club; Marriott Grand Residence Club; Sheraton Vacation Club; Westin Vacation Club; The Phoenician Residences, a Luxury Collection Residence Club, Scottsdale; and Ritz-Carlton Reserve.

Silver Elite members may enjoy priority late checkout at participating Marriott brands by contacting the front desk on the morning of their checkout. Gold Elite members can request a 2 p.m. late checkout by calling the front desk on that same morning. However, both Silver and Gold Elite members' late checkout options are subject to availability.
Platinum Elite members and those at higher tiers can request a late checkout as late as 4 p.m. at participating properties if they make the request during booking, check-in, or at any time during their stay. For Platinum Elite members and above at Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, late checkout is guaranteed only until 2 p.m., although they can request a 4 p.m. checkout based on availability. At resorts, convention hotels, and Design Hotels, late checkout until 4 p.m. is also based on availability, but it is guaranteed at other participating properties.
Your24
Ambassador Elite members enjoy an exclusive benefit through Your24: the option to request a specific check-in time and check out at that same time. To use Your24, Ambassador Elite members must submit their request at least two days prior to arrival, and the hotel needs to approve this request.
If you receive an approved check-in time between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., you can also ask for the late checkout benefit available to Platinum Elite members and above, extending your checkout to 4 p.m. Please note that your booked room may not be ready at check-in, and the hotel may temporarily assign you another room before moving you to your original room type once it's available.

However, the following properties do not offer Your24: Marriott Vacation Club; Marriott Grand Residence Club; Sheraton Vacation Club; Westin Vacation Club; Design Hotels; MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy properties; The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach; Atlantis Paradise Island; and The Phoenician Residences, a Luxury Collection Residence Club, Scottsdale.
Partner perks
Members at certain Marriott Bonvoy status levels can sign up for exclusive benefits with partner programs as follows:
- United Airlines and Marriott RewardsPlus collaboration: Titanium Elite members and above can register for complimentary United MileagePlus Premier Silver status.
- Emirates and Marriott alliance: Gold Elite members and above earn 3 points for every dollar spent on eligible Emirates flights (in addition to Skywards miles); Platinum Elite members and above can enjoy priority check-in and boarding on Emirates flights.
- Singapore Airlines and Marriott collaboration: Gold Elite members can fast-track to KrisFlyer Silver status; Platinum Elite members and above receive KrisFlyer Silver for 12 months and a fast track to Gold status.
- Hertz and Marriott partnership: Platinum Elite members can fast-track to Hertz Five Star status, while Titanium Elite members can obtain complimentary Five Star status and Ambassador Elite members can acquire complimentary President's Circle status.
Can credit cards aid in achieving Marriott elite status?
Credit cards can assist you in earning Marriott elite status. You can register for complimentary Marriott Bonvoy status as a benefit of the following cards (terms apply):
- Silver Elite status: Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card and Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card
- Gold Elite Status: Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card, Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card (enrollment required), The Platinum Card® from American Express (enrollment required) and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
- Platinum Elite status: Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card
You can also achieve Marriott Gold Elite status by spending $35,000 on purchases annually using the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card.

If you aim to earn Marriott elite status through elite night credits, holding one or more Marriott Bonvoy credit cards can be beneficial. Most consumer Marriott Bonvoy credit cards provide 15 elite night credits per calendar year, with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Amex offering the same. Additionally, holding the Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex grants you 15 elite night credits as well.
Thus, you can potentially accumulate up to 40 elite night credits each calendar year simply by having both the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Amex and the Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex. However, I prefer to accumulate 30 elite night credits each year by using the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card alongside the Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex. Furthermore, you earn one elite night credit for every $5,000 spent with the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card. So, if you're looking to earn more elite night credits through spending, the Boundless card is ideal for you.
Is it worthwhile to pursue Marriott elite status?
Marriott elite status provides significant benefits for frequent guests. When considering the value of pursuing Marriott elite status, think about how often you stay with Marriott (or plan to) and how much the perks would enhance your experience. If your stays are infrequent, it might not be beneficial to actively seek status beyond the complimentary options available through select credit cards.
Determining the value of Marriott elite status becomes more nuanced if you typically earn at least 20 elite night credits through your stays each year. In such cases, it may be worthwhile to concentrate your stays with Marriott and acquire one or more Marriott Bonvoy credit cards to gain additional elite night credits and aim for at least Platinum Elite status.

I stay with Marriott often enough that having the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card and the Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex makes sense, along with aiming for at least 20 nights for Platinum Elite status or 45 nights for Titanium Elite status each year. I aim to achieve at least Platinum Elite status annually because that tier unlocks the most desirable perks — including complimentary breakfast as a welcome gift option at select brands, lounge access at various locations, guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout at most properties, and potential upgrades to suites based on availability.
Key Takeaway
Marriott elite status provides significant benefits, particularly at higher levels. Additionally, if you're eligible for Marriott Bonvoy credit cards, you could receive complimentary Platinum Elite status through the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Amex.
Even if you're not inclined to pay a high annual fee for a credit card, it's still possible to earn Marriott Bonvoy status without accumulating all your elite night credits solely through stays. Many Marriott Bonvoy credit cards allow you to earn lower tiers of elite status and elite night credits.
In comparison to other hotel loyalty programs, achieving Marriott lifetime status might be more feasible for certain travelers, as it only requires meeting specific thresholds for elite night credits and years of holding the status. For instance, you can attain lifetime Platinum Elite status after 600 nights with Marriott and 10 years as a Platinum Elite member or higher.
