Pros:-super convenient location near bus station, literally could not be closer without actually being IN the bus station.-friendly staff-big, sunny balcony perfect for drying laundry, if you're that kind of budget traveller (which I unabashedly am)-walkable (about 25 minutes) to quirky, free, local hot springs-close to a couple convenience stores and coffee shops-fridge in room-intense water pressure-not the worst bed I've ever slept onCons:-no screens on windows, so only source of fresh air is to risk hosting a mosquito party by opening windows, or to turn on the ancient-smelling, musty air conditioner.-staff was friendly but spoke no English, which we worked around with Google Translate, so that wasn't too much of a problem-- the big problem was that I'd booked and paid for a room with Orbitz, but they had no idea of the booking, said there was no hotel email address or fax number, and when Orbitz customer service tried calling them to confirm the booking, they basically just hung up on them because they couldn't understand English. So I ended up having to pay for a room all over again, at about twice the Orbitz cost, and now its been 3 days later and I still haven't heard anything from Orbitz about a refund. So that sucks. Not sure who listed them on Orbitz, but whoever it was clearly never notified the front desk staff. Or, maybe it's just a scam. Who knows?-as I said, the staff were very friendly, but after staying there for a few days, my impression was that they are so good-natured because they do as little work as possible, opting instead to hang out all day in one of the empty rooms, watching soap operas and napping. If you come by during the day to try to check in, you can wait a full 20 minutes (probably longer) in the empty lobby without seeing anyone-- your only chance is to be brave enough to eventually wander upstairs to look for someone. Since they're mostly watching soaps and not cleaning during this time, all the vertical surfaces in our room were pretty filthy. I'll be honest, my sympathies are with the staff, because I know hotel housekeeping is an unpleasant, thankless, poorly-paid job, and I personally don't get bothered as long as the floor doesn't crunch and the shower doesn't give me foot fungus (and in fact the floors and bathroom were both fine), but if you're grossed out by living with obviously dirty walls and furniture, be warned.-wi-fi only works in the lobby, which is a pain, but not the worst thing in the world-walking into the heart of town for dinner is mildly terrifying, as there's plenty of traffic but few sidewalks. Make sure you carry some kind of light-emitting device (I usually just use my phone) if you decide to explore beyond the nearby 7-11 after dark. My first excursion into town, I also made the mistake of stepping onto the grassy highway divider in sandals, which annoyed a fiesty colony of ants. Believe me, trying to cross a highway in the dark while also trying to dance around and brush away tiny, intensely painful biting ants from your toes is an experience that will, if nothing else, help you work up a good appetite for dinner. All in all, I would probably stay here again if I were so unlucky as to find myself in Ranong again, but I can't in good conscience give it a better rating than 3 stars. I feel subjective affection for it while objectively realizing most people would find it overpriced for what you get.
