Summary:It was very nice and relaxing. Three days were absolutely enough. The cost/benefit ratio does not necessarily favor repeating. Difficult to reach, expensive on the island and unfortunately not a real bathing experience in May.If you like it chilled out and quiet, don't have to pay attention to individual euros and don't value luxury too highly, you're in good hands here. However, the neighboring islands perform significantly better in comparison. The Hotel Thapwarin:Considering the few offerings on the island, it’s definitely a good choice.Definitely something for the romantics. The Thapwarin is quite expensive, at least according to our choice of the beachfront bungalows. 4,500 THB in May is considerable (we negotiated down to 3,800, still a hefty price). That puts some pressure on the price/performance ratio. Unfortunately the hotel is getting a bit old. There is some repair backlog. Anyone who has traveled a lot in Thailand will tolerate it.The employees are predominantly from Burma. You won't get very far with Thai, but English is fine. Everyone is very friendly and accommodating. In the low season the island is quite deserted. You don't really have a choice. You can feel that in the prices. Whether for the hotel (May is still high season for accommodation prices here) or if you want to leave the island.Considering that there are hardly any guests here at the end of May, the breakfast buffet is quite generous. There is even a fresh omelette made to order included in the price. The restaurant is overall very good, but also a bit more expensive. The prices are about 50% higher than the prices in tourist areas, more like 4-star hotels, but the hotel cannot keep up with that. Homemade ice cream is very tasty, in a small pot for 90 THB. The local fish is also recommended. In the evening, with low lighting and muted, slow music, it is quite romantic. The massage is one of the worst I have enjoyed in 25 years in Thailand. And also quite expensive. No risk of repetition. 1 hour oil massage 900 THB. That's more than double the standard prices.Normal Thai Nuad 90 minutes = 750 THB, also significantly more expensive than normal. The knowledge of the ladies leaves a lot to be desired. Shortly before risk of injury. At first I wanted to stop, but then I switched to “petting”. Even there and with oil, I thought my back would be rubbed raw. The massage of the legs was better then. Hand and fingers, I thought, wanted to tear them off. Still hurting hours later.Later we were supposed to pay more money for the treatment with a bit of oil without discussing it beforehand! There is a small kiosk on the hotel grounds. But you only get extremely few things there.Replacing my outdated slippers was not possible anywhere on the island.Koh Ngai, the island:There are no speedboats in the low season. You can only rent longtail boats privately. From Koh Mook to Koh Ngai it costs 1,600 THB per private boat, the hotel wanted 2,800 THB back. We then booked for 2,000 THB.A nice, quiet place to chill.A beautiful backdrop. At the end of May the water is not clear, which was also the case on Koh Mook.In the morning the water is high enough for swimming, but there is also a lot of debris floating around. Whitecaps on calm water speak for themselves. Low tide begins at 3:00 p.m. Then you have to walk a long way through warm water (better with shoes) if you want to swim. The hotels are all clustered along the 2.5 km long beach. Different standards, in addition to the Thapwarin there are even rental tents. At the end of May 2024, the Co Co Cottage Resort next door to Thapwarin was closed and was being renovated. You could hear it a little bit, but not really disturbing. The Co Co Cottage has a similar layout but would be significantly cheaper. Could be a good alternative. The Koh Ngai resort looks nice in the pictures, but in life it has the charm of a bunker complex.
