The good, the bad and the ugly…THE GOODOwners are friendly and the communal building has a great cosy, backpacker vibe.THE BAD- There’s a lot of overdue maintenance; at least in our cabin (purple one, completely at the back of the terrain). I can’t speak for the other ones.- Curtains are of the see through kind. What’s worse, our kids’ room didn’t even have curtains in front of all windows. Which meant no privacy + waking up at sunrise.- Mosquito nets and screens had holes the size of rabbits. On an island where malaria is prevalent, this is unacceptable neglect. See photos.- As a result there were bed bugs everywhere; the occasional scorpion as well. Let me be clear, I know we’re in the wild here, so there will always be some. But that’s something else than opening the floodgates for them to come in to party away.- There’s a resident, venomous, pit viper on their grounds, that also crosses the walking paths. Now, the Steve Irwins amongst us might find this brilliant. Others not so much. Especially so, families with (young) kids. I.m.o. the owners should at least warn guests about this proactively, such that they’re not strolling around casually bare feet and with their heads in the clouds.- The beach is only good for swimming at high tide. It’s dangerous at low tide, because of the many slippery rocks that are then exposed. This injured one of the other guests during our stay.- Food quality was good, but service is bad. From the menu we ordered grilled chicken. We were brought deep fried chicken. Think KFC. We indicated politely that we ordered something else. Then the staff said: “we never grill chicken, we always deep fry it”. But… “it was on your menu and you just took my order”... How then?- If you order filtered water, you’ll get tap water, that’s cooked above the fire, with a recognizable smokey taste. No biggie, I just don’t like that.THE UGLY- The place is downright dirty. Think stains everywhere, insect excrements in the shower, hairs from previous guests, etc. Now I know, we’re not in Paris or NY here, not even in Bali. But also for Sumba standards this is not acceptable. Other places around the island we stayed at were simple, but clean. This one was simple and dirty. See photo’s. There’s no excuse for this type of dirtiness. For us this was the main reason to leave early and check in to another hotel, elsewhere in Tambolaka.- There were locals (on a business retreat) in two of the other cabins. They played incredibly loud music until at least 1:30 AM and started again at 6:30 AM. The other guests lay awake for the bigger part of the night. The owners apparently thought this was completely acceptable. They didn’t even try to intervene. The rest of the guests just had to live with it. Yes, we were given an IDR 100k (EUR 5,70… woohoo!) discount because of the discomfort. But this is not about EUR 5,70, it is about taking no responsibility whatsoever to ensure that ALL your guests can enjoy their holidays.
