Very friendly staff and FANTASTIC food.The rooms are basic but the location is nice. Close to the river, the village and easy to explore a bit on your own.For jungle trek the guide Rey is very enthusiastic and gives useful information during the trek.If you visit Sumatra, start here in Batu katak

After 8 weeks in Indonesia, we still think fondly of our stay at Orchid in Batu Katak.The staff are exceptionally friendly (special mention for Ari - what a guy) and always made us feel welcome, talking together every evening and teaching us the basics of Bahasa Indonesian numbers and phrases. The evenings are peaceful, surrounded by jungle and a rushing river.I can safely say that the food was the best we ate on our entire travels across Indonesia. It varied nightly, with a huge spread of amazing home cooked dishes.We also did a guided tour of the natural limestone forest to see animals in the true wild, this was a unique experience.Batu Katak village has a great approach to eco tourism, and a friendly small community that welcomes you in. You should definitely pay a visit if you're in North Sumatra, it's a short enough public bus ride from Medan, before the much more touristic Bukit Lawang.

We were very comfortable staying at Orchid Bungalow. The food was delicious and plentiful and the manager is very friendly and helpful. It was a perfect base from which to start the jungle trek that we had planned.

The Orchid Bungalow is hard to book online (I think everything in Batu Katak is hard to book online) but a phone call or WhatsApp to the bilingual group that own/operate it gets you up and running with a minimum of hassle. …

What a place! If you have time in North Sumatra definitely make the effort to come here! The staff who run the place do their best to make sure your stay is as good as it can be, whilst being super friendly. The rooms are comfortable and have all is needed, but you’ll probably spend your time talking to the locals in the dining area. The food is amazing, they put on a big spread every lunch and evening, everything is suited to one’s needs. We also went trekking with the guides who help out here, a beautiful walk topped off with amazing flora and fauna. We were lucky enough to see gibbons and orangutans in the wild! Not semi wild as other places around are. Thank you for an amazing stay, hope to come back soon!
