Go back in time with this one-of-a-kind hotel, the oldest in the world actually! There is a useful and complementary shuttle service from Minobu station that will get you to the hotel. There, the service is kind and comprehensive. Baths are both outside, inside and private (to reserve for free). You will be provided with traditional Yukatas and you will eat carefully prepared food (twice a day included).Overall a great experience!

Amazing experience. I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a once in a lifetime kind of thing. The views are breathtaking and the river right next to the hotel has some really pretty water. The workers were extremely accommodating, and the facilities were beautiful. Everything was clean, and a ton of amenities were provided. Dinner and breakfast was an amazing experience as well.

This hotel was an absolute disappointment! From the moment we walked in, we were met with the stench of musty carpets. We arrived around 8:30 PM, only to be informed that no dinner would be served because their service shuts down at 8 PM. Being in a secluded mountain area, there were no other dining options nearby. The staff was incredibly rude, and they seemed to charge extra for everything. For example, requesting just one extra towel cost us 1,100 yen! This is a traditional Japanese hotel where you're expected to sleep on the floor. You're given minimal linens, with no chance of getting an extra pillow (you only get one) or additional blankets.Overall, if you have the option to stay at this location, I strongly recommend finding an alternative hotel. Don't waste your time or money here!

The location is beautiful. The open-air baths on the ground floor are gorgeous and extremely relaxing. The food is amazing. Dinner is like seven courses seasonal gourmet sourced locally. Staff is friendly, helpful, and efficient. The only complaint is the building is showing its age a bit, in particular in the hall carpets. If you're going to come up into the Minami Alps to spend a night, you may as well stay here--and then another day and another night while you're at it! Yeah, it's unusual to spend two nights at a ryokan, but with this one, it just makes sense.

Wow, what a cool experience. This is really a place to relax and enjoy some traditional Japanese hospitality. By far, it is the most unique and cool experience I've done in Japan. If you don't have your own car, you're sort of stuck at the hotel, but the view is lovely, and it is very relaxing.

I had an incredibly wonderful time here. This is a traditional hotel with hot baths that rotate between male and female timings. While we were there, the hotel was pretty empty which was great for us as the baths were usually just me. Staff were wonderful, in particular the woman whose name is similar to "chicago" and who lived in USA. She made calls to hotels and car rental places and was just lovely. The breakfasts and dinners were wonderful and very filling. This is a remote hotel and there really is nothing around but gorgeous nature. Great place to soak, read, nap and just have a quiet time in beautiful nature.

We came to Nishiyama Onsen at the end of June. I was very very excited to come here knowing a bit of the history behind it. Here is my experience here.First off the bus to get there and back is free, which is great. You get to the hotel and are greeted by the staff in a very professional manner. The hotel itself is pretty big and spacious, we also came on a Monday so it wasn’t too busy at all.We arrive to our room, so far so good looks great the atmosphere and design was really nice. We put our drinks in the fridge but it wasn’t on, an hour later it wasn’t cold. We call the staff to check on it and it was broken so they take our drinks to their fridge to get cold (which I very much appreciated). And after dinner they put a new fridge in with our drinks so thank you for that! Unfortunately our shower or bath didn’t have hot water so it was pretty much useless as well.We go to the hot springs and yes they are as good as people say! It wasn’t too busy so sometimes you can be completely by yourself. If you’ve ever watched YouTube videos on this place be aware that the food isn’t the same, it changes with the season. I wasn’t a huge fan of the food, most were served cold. The best food was the basic miso soup, waygu, sashimi. The rest was radish, tomato, pickled and other unfamiliar offerings that my Japanese friend would barely eat herself. Judging by the videos may-April seems to be the time to come here for food. The bridge was also non operational which saddened me because the other ones are a 40-55min walk.I would come back here for the hot spring. Just giving my experience. Thanks again to the staff they were really great.

I was most excited about this ryokan of all the other ryokan I've book to stay. It is located in a secluded mountain area. The journey from Nara to Yamanashi - We left at 8AM, overall travel time took about 7 hours to get to Yamanashi from Nara.Bus ride up the mountain - The view was so beautiful and scenic! I love the large windows so I can look out and film. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like we were some VIPs. I can't say enough about their service and professional courtesy when greeting guests. Their rating on Google is a 4-star hotel I think, but it honestly felt like it was a 5 star hotel. they took my luggage and bags to carry everything for me. I carried nothing in. They gave me slippers and stored my shoes in their lobby. Despite the hotel being very old, it did not feel like it. I went to another ryokan later that wasn't as old but it was much more dirty and it even smelled. This hotel was clean and did not smell at all. I was afraid the carpet inside room might smell, like some old inn does, but it did not.The room I stayed in had a mountain view with indoor seating. I opened the window for some fresh air and listen to the river. View was very beautiful. Bathroom sink is hidden behind the cupboard, away from toilet and bathtub, located at the other end of the room. I did not use the bathtub or shower in the room at all since I used the public ones. They provided a beautiful lockbox to store things. The telephone to the front desk even got its own pillow haha, I found that funny. I had tea and welcoming snack as I wait for host to come back to go over the ryokan detail. At the entrance to the room, they also provide additional indoor sandals, socks & satin pouch to carry essentials like a purse. This ryokan have three public onsen with men and women separated at diferent times. There are also two private ones that you can reserve ahead of time. I reserved the one name Seoto. The view was so nice while taking a soak. I really love outdoor onsen with nice mountain view and I was glad I was able to reserve this time slot while there sun was still out.Their food 10/10 - OMGosh the meals were THE BEST out of all other ryokan's meal I have had during this trip. The host serve the meals in five courses. The third course was my favorite with the freshly charcoal grilled fish on a stick! It is a type of dish that they slowly grilled over several hours so even the bone can be eaten whole with the fish. I ate the whole thing. It was delicious. By the time fourth course came, I was starting to feel full already, but I still took my time and ate everything slowly. While we ate dinner, the staff came to the room to prepare the futons for us to sleep. I checked out the onsen when I woke at 1AM and then again at 5AM, and 7AM before breakfast. Breakfast was one single large meal served at once, and it was a lot of food. I had a hard time finishing everything. Everything was delicious though. 10/10.On our way out to the bus, I was lucky to witness a rainbow sprouting out of their onsen water during my last day! What a great way to end my wonderful stay here.Of all 5 ryokan I have stayed at during my trip to Japan, this was THE BEST one. It ended up being my favorite ryokan stay out of all of the rest! I want to go back again! But it was one of the most expensive one I stayed at. However, considering the onsen and kaiseki meals, it was worth it. I would highly recommend everyone to go at least once for the experience! The long journey to get there was worth it! All of the staff were very nice and professional, I felt like a VIP staying there. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were 10/10. It was definitely the best kaiseki meal I had during my entire vacation in Japan (I had several). The room and onsen were very clean despite being the oldest running hotel in the world! They even provide their private bus to pick up and drop off guest at the train station. I had the best stay there and would definitely visit again if I can!!

A wonderful experience from the beginning to the end. Very nice and attentive staff, who will advise you if you need help or do not know what are the traditions and what is to be observed. The whole onsem is in traditional design. The rooms are very spacious, you sleep on comfortable mattresses, which are prepared for you during dinner and put away during breakfast. The dinner and breakfast itself is a real culinary experience. A multi-course menu created from the best ingredients. Everything is described in detail and explained by the friendly staff. The hot springs are, in a word, perfect. We've been to three outdoor ones. Beautifully warm water, clean everywhere and a wonderful view of the valley with river. An oasis of peace and relaxation! Thank you very much!!!
