I'll never forget the night I spent in this quality ryokan. We were warmly welcomed. The place was clean and peaceful. I've rarely felt so soothed and regretted not staying longer. We had a view of the river, in which we spotted a multitude of koi carp. We had a traditional Japanese breakfast and enjoyed the wonderful onsen.

This ryokan feels like an absolutely traditional experience. The owners practically only speak Japanese and are extremely friendly. They welcomed us with tea and cookies, gave us a tour of the ryokan and looked after us. The rooms feel full of history and good memories, they have a view of the river that divides Takayama and are absolutely calm at night. The bathroom in the room is a great addition for a little more privacy.Absolutely recommended.

The old owners are used to foreign travellers, even though they do not speak a foreign language. That's why they have many regular customers with special and physical communication skills.

Sumiyoshi is my favorite ryokan in Japan. It is run by an absolutely adorable older couple. The ryokan allows you to have a 100% Japanese experience with close and warm attention. The location is perfect, in a quiet corner very close to the morning markets and the famous Yoshijima House, one of my favorite places in Takayama. I can't recommend this place enough to do it justice.

Just the most lovely hospitality you’ll ever have. This inn has so much charm. My room had a view of the river which was so relaxing. Breakfast was delicious and served right in the room. The bath was especially relaxing. But really it’s the people that make the stay such a meaningful memorable experience. Will always cherish the time I spent here.
