This place is way overrated for what they offer. The garden is very nice but the place has definitely experienced better times. This ryokan needs serious renovation and way too expensive for what it is. Mostly westerners stay there (we only saw one Japanese family in the two days we stayed) and the food is not good nor fresh. For an onsen destination, this ryokan has a terribile bathing offer. Only one bathing option for men and women and the rooms with the “indoor bath” (which they make you pay a lot) have a terribile, old and dirty bath. For the amount you pay, you would expect complementaries from the hotel, while they don’t offer you absolutely anything and you have to pay for every single thing in the room (also for water). We never experienced the same treatment in the other places we stayed in. During our trip we stayed in much nicer onsens in other regions of Japan which were more traditional, had way better bathing options and less expensive. I would totally recommend to skip this place, save your money and choose another onsen. I would actually recommend not to go to Hakone at all, as way too touristy and all places are crazy expensive. If you want to be in nature and stay close to Tokyo, there are many other options. Scam scam scam !

Beautiful location in the mountains, very scenic property. That said it needs about 50 years of updating. WiFi was included but minimally working, understandable due to location. There was just a lot of built up hard water stains, random stains on furniture in our room, peeling flooring and wallpaper in spots. We had the same server for all meals and the food was a bit of a mixed bag, very traditional and we tried everything from our massive tasting menus but the less food we finished the more hostile the servers vibe was. (the shabu shabu wagyu was the worst meat we had in our 2 weeks in Japan sorry) I’m not sure if not finishing the food was offensive but by our second(last) breakfast she basically stopped serving us and left halfway through our meal and left a trainee to see us out. Seasonal issue: the property was absolutely filled with massive spider webs, hard to enjoy or even see most of the “gardens”. They’re getting some pretty mediocre reviews on booking.com where I booked, I’m guessing that’s why it won’t let me leave one there. We picked this place truly because it’s tattoo-friendly but overall you could book a room with a private onsen somewhere nicer for a similar price.

I read some polarizing reviews before we stayed here, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m glad we stayed.||This is not a Holiday Inn Express, and if you come in expecting modern hotel amenities, you should not stay here. …

I mean, pretty darn complete for a Ryokan experience complete with Kaiseki meal, yukata robes, beautiful outdoor bath and grounds, and impeccable service. Only wish I stayed here a day longer to experience the baths a bit more in the day light and night time. The meal was overall very enjoyable, some of the courses like the sushi and wagyu were amazing, but some like the tempura was very avg.Our room, Tsuki, was nice and spacious on the first floor, but there were some parts that were not super clean. Also due to being on the ground floor perhaps there's a certain dampness to it I did not like. The grounds tho were absolutely beautiful, amazingly photogenic everywhere you looked. Beware of spiders in the path tho.

The service was like an 11/10! All the staff were above and beyond friendly and hospitable and lots of great English. There were so many beautiful touches. The place is older but it added to the charm for us. The grounds are also beautiful to walk through. We opted for the private onsen room and full breakfast and dinner dining and had no regrets. The open air onsen is gorgeous too though if you don’t have a private one! The location is top notch right in Gora near the train station and cable car.

An old and very very authentic ryokan experience tucked into the mountains of hakone. Serene and peaceful. This place has a ton of great history and the kaiseki dinner and breakfasts were fantastic. Be sure to stay two nights so you can experience a menu switch up on the 2nd night/morning and fully enjoy the onsen relaxation. You may see reviews saying its "run down", these people are babies and its not really true anyways from our experience. Sure its not some modern pristine ryokan, but thats exactly the charm and what makes it authentic and a great experience.

I can’t thank the staff here enough for being so lovely and accommodating during our stay. From the moment we entered, it proved exceptional: upon arriving, they helped us move our luggage while sheltering us with umbrellas against a heavy rainstorm. Some of the staff speak English, and we had a particularly fantastic one (I forgot to catch her name…) who served her cheerful attitude along with a delicious breakfast and dinner. We had to catch a train to Haneda airport on the last day, and the staff were able to arrange for us to eat 30 minutes earlier than they typically open, which I didn’t realize until we were the only parties seated. The front desk also helped us reserve a taxi — a difficult feat for a Saturday morning. I’ve stayed in other ryokans in Hakone, but this one has set itself apart with its world class service.Note: the facilities are a little older, but I think that’s part of the charm. The open air bath was breathtakingly beautiful. Be warned that sometimes bugs can slip into the room, but we only encountered two or three that were swiftly dispatched.
