I thought it was gonna be a pleasant stay due to all the positive reviews on their Airbnb listing except for one that i saw prior to booking, but it's unfortunate that i pretty much had the same experience as that person.I got lost because the address is wrong. According to them when I finally found the hostel, it's Google Maps's fault cause they put in the right address, it's just that Google Maps shows the wrong one. For those who are planning to book a stay at this hostel, just search "The Next Door Lower East Nine Hostel" instead of using the address they have in their listing. I hope they'd change it cause apparently guests getting lost and knocking on someone else's private property "happens often." I feel bad for the person whose house I went into cause the description in the airbnb listing sounded exactly like the person's house, and it even told me to open the gate. I hope it hasn't happened to them too often..It looks amazing in the photos, but once you're there will you only realize that the management doesn't really maintain their hostel properly. There was dust everywhere, stains on the couch, tables, toilets, even inside my bunk. There was mold on the shower walls. They have several refrigerators but they look like they haven't been cleaned in a while..I wasn't gonna write a review in the first place, but what drew the line for me was the fact that the bunk bed on top of mine made LOUD creaking and rattling noises whenever the person there moved. It woke me up at 4 AM and I couldn't go back to sleep. As for the pros... the female receptionist was nice and you can see the pagoda from the window. The place is pretty empty during the day so you can have the place to yourself then. It's also quite near to Toji Station (3 min walk) and Kyoto Station (10-15 min walk)

Firstly they have a proper mattress and not just a 2inch sleeping mat that is popular across East Asia so I had a very comfy sleep. The common area is fantastic, loads of space to cook for yourself or sit, mix of dining/sofas/chairs. …

This was my first hostel experience ever during my first time traveling solo. I gotta say this play was perfect. It was cozy, clean, and the staff were really amiable and super helpful in planning out my stay in Tokyo. The complimentary breakfast is simple, but the custom breakfast were pretty affordable. They also rent bikes, which is a real treat to check out the city. The price goes down for day rental after 3 pm.

We did not sleep at the hotel as we stayed in Imagine a little bit further down the road but LE9 (lower east 9) was recommended for breakfast by our hotel. So we took our bikes and went over there.. wat an amazing place it was! …

Such a good hostel. I normally don't like staying in hostels but this was more like a hotel. Everything is so clean and quiet. The rooms are well done with separate sleeping areas so you can hide away even with others in the room. The showers are very clean and have lockable doors. The staff can not do enough for you. The breakfast that is included is scrummy too. Would definitely stay there again.

Fantastic youth hostel. The beds are capsule style and isolate noise very well so you feel like you have your own tiny suite. The hostel's design is fantastic, and everything is meticulously clean and well thought out. The staff are fantastic, friendly, and work extremely hard. Check out the rooftop terrace at night to see the nearby temple lit up.

Relatively new hostel (2 months at time of writing). It's super clean. Easily the best shower I've seen in hostels in Japan. The staff are very hospitable, speaking great English but also replying me in Japanese when I start the conversation in Japanese. They have food parties where u can try some Japanese dishes. Breakfast included is a choice of coffee and some toast. It's close to Kyoto station, but the walk to Gion and other places of interest is a little long however the hostel is well served by buses. The only downside is that I was cold in my bed (but that is a common theme for me in Japan and not a good indicator for the average warm blooded human). The sleeping provision was a blanket and not duvet so was too thin (for me), but when I asked for another I was promptly given.

The staff were so helpful here, breakfast was included and delicious, in particular the coffee was the best I have had in Japan. The rooms were clean, but small. Our first night started off with a roof top BBQ including a free drink. The place was immaculate and the showers hot! Highly recommended.

Awesome cozy hostel. My shared room had 4 beds in it but the overall room was a bit small. The rest is all very well organized. Lovely showers, really way better than expected! There's free "breakfast", which is just some toast, eggs, orange juice etc. But it's free so no complains. Rooms have airconditioning which is always nice and the staff is nice too. The location is okay, 15 min walk from the station and you have a lovely view at the Toji temple from the roof terrace. But you're not in an very active or busy neighborhood. One thing that's truely bad about this place, the internet... Talking about barely able to load a news page slow. The internet is outdated for 2005 standards. All in all, would recommend!
