Tanaka-ya was a nice place to stay while we were in Kyoto. The tatami mat bedroom with futons was comfortable and spacious. The shared bathroom and showers were always clean. Communication with the hostess was easy and she was very kind. The guesthouse is located on a cute, traditional alleyway. The guesthouse has a shared fridge but no shared sitting spaces. It is a 10-15 minute walk to the busiest and most touristy part of Gion. It is close to a metro line and a few bus routes. We would gladly stay here again.

We enjoyed our stay at this establishment. The host was available and helpful. She offered us fruit during our stay and cold tea upon arrival, which we appreciated. The establishment was very well located, close to public transport. For the room, it was large. During the summer it can get very hot very quickly, especially considering the host turns off the air conditioning when we leave the room, but fortunately the room cools down quite quickly when we turn the air conditioning back on.Small downside, the room door did not lock, which we brought to the attention of the host. Also, we found the mattresses a little thin. Please note that the shower and bathroom are shared with other guests of the establishment.

The owner welcomed us with cold tea and snacks (this was in the midst of a heat wave). On one particularly hot day we came back to an assortment of cut and chilled fruits. Honestly go stay at tanaka-ya and experience the warmth that the place exudes. The WiFi is spotty at times and the thinner walls meant that outdoor noise and light could bleed in. The neighbourhood is generally quiet, so noise isn't a consistent issue. One common shower and two common toilets/washrooms.

Really great stay here in this traditional old townhouse in the heart of the gion district in Kyoto. The room was a decent size and the host was amazing. She ensured I was always comfortable and even brought snacks for me. Very quiet area at night, but still just a 10 min walk to the main nightlife area. 100% recommend!
