Stayed in June 2024. Loved this place. Good for small group looking for alternative accom to usual hotel or full service accom. Good location and prompt response from owners who gave very clear instructions on how to access the place, and also helpful info to pass on to taxi drivers.

We had a great one-night stay at the Star Suite in The Old Modern. We were very thankful to Curtis and Junko for squeezing us in last minute.The Old Modern is located a little ways from their other properties, but still on a peaceful side street and in the same district. The entrance and the communal area are nice, with a garden and little library that we passed to get to our suite, which was on the second floor.The suite was lovely and had carefully preserved details of the old house everywhere. The two bedrooms (one tatami and futon, one hardwood floor and western bed) were spacious and clean. The two rooms are separated by a shoji screen, and each room has its own entrance to the modern bathroom, where the washer/dryer combo machine is also located.It was a very comfortable stay, and we made use of the wonderful recommendations in the binder on the desk—the udon restaurant we tried was delicious! Check-in and checkout were easy as well.We’d definitely stay here again if we get the chance!

I had a wonderful stay in the Circle Suite at the beautifully restored old Kyoto machiya (townhouse). The room is spacious and stylishly furnished, and has everything you need for a comfortable and peaceful stay. The Old Modern is located in a quiet residential area, but close to transport and easy walking distance from downtown Kyoto, Gion and Higashiyama. Highly recommend!

We had a great stay at the Old Modern Deco Suite (upstairs unit). This charming restored "machiya" townhouse is walking distance to the subway and bus stops, food supplies and convenience stores. As noted on their website it is “…an eclectic blend of traditional Japanese structure with some very early "modern" Western details such as a fireplace, high beamed ceilings, and parquet flooring.” If you’re looking for something more interesting than a hotel stay, this is a solid pick. Book early!There were nice amenities such as a Nepresso machine and pods, washer/dryer, microwave, a quiet small refrigerator, tea kettle, iron and ironing board, and firm but comfortable Western style mattress. The Wi-Fi connection was solid and fast. The bathroom has a bathtub/shower with quality body wash, shampoo, and conditioner provided. There is a small table and chairs near a courtyard facing window, where you can have a pleasant breakfast. The provided curated list of nearby restaurants was very helpful. Our experience at the Old Modern was elevated thanks to excellent guest services provided by Mina and Junko who both speak English. They assisted with the booking process, and their help making reservations with restaurants in Kyoto was greatly appreciated.Street noise was significant, but we were able to sleep with earplugs. The stairway is steep with narrow treads which may pose a problem for some. Still the overall experience was great. Highly recommended.

Our stay in the garden suite at The Old Modern was superb. A very well-presented traditional suite with comfortable bed on tatami mats overlooking a peaceful garden. There was also a room to relax in with sofa and coffee/ tea facilities and a bathroom. The touches with antique furniture and sliding screens were special. It was a wonderful stay and I would highly recommend this accommodation for your stay in Kyoto.

We had the most amazing experience at the Old Modern! The location was in the cutest little streets and walking distance to many key areas. The self-check in was seamless and the house was spotless- clean, organised and well kept. Our Garden Suite was the biggest place we've stayed in the Japan, it was spacious and absolutely beautiful. It had a Japanese garden and the bed was extremely comfortable. The hosts left us loads of information and tips that were helpful during our stay.I would highly recommend to everyone!

The Old Modern is easily the best place for an extended family or group of friends looking to stay in one place but still have some privacy. It consists of four lovely units within one immaculately restored early modern Japanese house (the former house of a prosperous Kyoto architect). There's a lovely common area where people can meet to talk before retiring to their own individual sanctuaries. Each unit has a sitting area, a washer/dryer, a bathroom with a deep bathtub and strong shower, at least one large bed, as well as a fridge and Nespresso machine with all the fixings. But the best part is the folder you'll find on the table with a carefully curated listing of restaurants and cafes which the incredibly helpful staff of the Old Modern can help you reserve. The thing I like most about the Old Modern is the location: It's within walking distance of downtown, Kyoto Station and the southern Higashiyama sightseeing district, but it's in a quiet neighborhood that is blissfully free from the crowds of other areas. If you're planning a trip for the extended family or your friend group, you should check the availability of the Old Modern. It's the perfect base for exploring the Old Capital.

We had two families staying in the house and it exceeded our expectations in every way. The architecture is stunning and it has everything you need for a comfortable stay. There is plenty of space for your luggage, the bathrooms are modern and well equipped and the beds were super comfortable.We booked based on the pictures but they don't do it justice.The location is great with lots to see nearby and metro terminals a short walk away. Curtis and the team have also put a lot of effort into the information booklet which was fantastic.One word of caution, once you've used the combination washer/dryers provided you'll be ordering one when you get home... ;)

We booked the entire house for 6 people for 6 nights over the new year and absolutely loved it!The house itself is beautiful and kept in pristine condition. Each room has a washer/dryer, heated floors, coffee machine, mini fridge. The front half (Circle + Deco) is more "western" style whereas the back half (Garden + Star) is more traditionally Japanese. The rooms are big and extremely spacious. We loved the little courtyard.The location is perfect – conveniently located within walking distance to amenities and lots of sights.Curtis, Junko, and Mina were very helpful with providing us with information in the lead up to the trip. They also helped with any issues we had during our stay.We will definitely be back!!

Absolutely incredible stay in Kyoto at the Old Modern. I stayed for 7 nights in the Circle Suite. It is hard to imagine a better place to stay for a long visit in the area. The location is wonderful and made it easy to access the area by foot, train, or taxi. The property itself is immaculate. Incredible design, perfect condition, with every amenity needed (including washer/dryer) for an extended stay. The Old Kyoto team was a joy to work with and even helped me secure a number of extremely difficult to book dinner reservations and did so with a smile. Absolutely wonderful experience. I will be back.

We stayed in the Star Suite at the Old Modern for six days. The neighborhood was super convenient for walking into Gion but still nice and quiet. The space was beautiful and comfortable and we were pleasantly surprised with how well the washer dryer worked. We stayed as a couple but you could probably comfortable stay with one or two small kids.

The location was amazing, next to many bus stops, downtown, and a metro. We stayed in the Circle Suite, and the room was beautiful and the staff was very kind. The room included a book with recommendations for places to visit and restaurants to eat at. All the restaurants we tried off the list was amazing! Would definitely book this place again.

The Old Modern is a beautiful place to stay at in Kyoto. We stayed at the Star Suite. It’s got a two rooms - one is a traditional Japanese room with the futon bed and Tatami flooring while the other room is of western style. But the whole Suite exudes beauty with its simplicity and traditional Japanese windows.Even though there is no staff on the premises, Junko and Curtis were always available anytime over email and phone. They have enough information in the room in the form of a file repository which gives great recommendations for restaurants or Kyoto walks.They have a beautiful inner courtyard which has a bookshelf with amazing books on Japan.We absolutely loved our stay at The Old Modern. I highly recommend this place.

Great location and the accommodations were fabulous ~ we loved the ambient heated floors and large bathroom! We were fortunate to experience a local farmers/ flea market at the temple next door that featured local arts/crafts and produce.

I've been to Kyoto many times, but this was my first time staying at such a wonderful inn, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there!Historical buildings and furnishings are mixed with modern elements to create a picturesque setting.The room is equipped with new floor heating, a double bed, bathtub, and washing machine, so you can enjoy your stay without any inconvenience.You can also walk to Gion, so it's convenient for sightseeing.On the way, I came across an old-fashioned pickle shop near Kenninji Temple, so I bought a large quantity of Kyoto pickles. I was able to do a lot of good shopping at a much cheaper price than the Nishiki Market I went to later. ♪ It's fun to walk down the back roads from the hotel and discover a lot of things ♪
