We’ve just spent two wonderful nights, here, and everything has been perfect. ||The hotel is miles from anywhere so you either need a car or use the hotel shuttle bus to ferry you to and from the nearest station. …

We absolutely loved our stay at this onsen and hotel. We used their shuttle to stay in the area while walking parts of the Nakasendo Trail. The hotel dinner was five star and included a seven course meal, with each course presented beautifully and consisting of excellent ingredients and preparation. We were not expecting such a treat at such an affordable price. We had our 1.5 year old with us, which I would not typically do for such a sophisticated dinner, but they were very patient and even brought her her own adorable dinnerware set. The onsens were lovely and the setting was unbelievable beautiful. This was a real highlight of our trip and I would highly recommend it.

This was just what I wanted after a busy conference in Tokyo the previous week, just get away and relax for a couple of days before returning home. I waked from Magome to Tsumago then spent three nights here. …

I stayed on a weekday in late summer 2023. Early in the morning, I took a walk around the inn. I stepped on the morning dew as I walked, surrounded by negative ions. There was a staff member burning wood near the hotel entrance. The scenery of the firewood burning, the fire dancing, the smell of burning wood, and smoke drifting through the air is like a Japanese painting. I wondered why they were burning wood in the morning. It wasn't like they were burning garbage, and it didn't seem like it was for a bath. . . .It was for a morning meal. The burnt wood was used as charcoal to make a personal charcoal grill for grilling dried fish for breakfast. Just for this reason, that staff member had been facing the hot flames since morning. However, he did not make that effort when explaining the meal. Maybe? I asked him after the meal, and he answered me.The rice ohitsu is, of course, made of wood. What is plain wood these days? (Shiraki means that the wood is not coated or otherwise processed and has a limited shelf life, so it does not last long.)Unlike plastic or painted ones, wooden ohitsu require a lot of effort to maintain after use. When I was checking out, I observed that the washed ohitsu were taken to the courtyard and placed with the inside of the ohitsu facing the direction of the sun, so that they would dry well in the sun. If you use plastic or paint, the colors will be bright and will be popular with customers, and maintenance after use will be easy. If it's made of wood, it looks plain and is difficult to maintain. You can never wash it with a machine, and it is a pain to wash the rice grains stuck to the ohitsu by hand. Still, I felt the inn's determination to use this wooden ohitsu. When you take a bite of the freshly cooked rice on your chopsticks, you can enjoy a wonderful combination of aromas in your mouth, with a faint woody aroma. The dinners were all detailed and unremarkable, but they were all made with rare ingredients and elaborate dishes that would be obvious to those who understand Japanese food culture. The bath was also very nice. There are stalls and a balcony where you can see the stars. The great thing about this inn is that it doesn't explain everything in words. I think it would be a waste not to explain in words the efforts of great customer service. I'm glad that I was able to experience the hospitality of a modest and quiet ryokan.
