This is an excellent "Auberge" about 15 minutes from Hotaka station by taxi featuring fantastic food, access to nearby museums, and a very kind and helpful owner. Auberge is originally a French word for inn/ hostel. While at first glance you might think that this is a typical Japanese 'pension' (a western-style home offering simple accommodations) the owner is very clear that his focus is on a fine dining experience, and this is not a simple 'B&B'! Indeed, the owner-operator is a French chef, and our experience included an excellent 4-5 course meal, delivered over the course of a couple of hours. Furthermore, every dish was explained (in Japanese - English was not available) including the history of each dish and the local origin of the ingredients used (Note: depending on your group, you may or may not enjoy this commentary, but I found it provided a level of information and interest that took the experience beyond what you would find in a restaurant.) The following morning, the experience was repeated! This time outside on a balcony looking out over the countryside and mountains in the distance. An omelette was made fresh at our table, and local vegetables, bacon and home-made bread included. In terms of the stay, the facilities met our expectations for a basic 'pension' experience in Japan in an older house (see images that accompany this review). Two guest rooms are on site. Basic amenities were provided for the very small unit bathroom (razor, toothbrush, toothpaste, towels hairdryer, etc). The room had two single western style beds, a low sofa, side table, tv, small fridge, and outlets - but there was no wifi. It is worth pointing out that this location is just a few minutes walk from an excellent art museum with lovely views and lawns, a park (with soft-drink vending machines) a small winery/ cafe, and a highly rated traditional soba restaurant. The owner's passion for food, the excellent meals and the owner's kindness are something I will not soon forget, and I hope to visit again in the future!

The dishes provided by the veteran French chef are made with carefully selected vegetables and ingredients, and are seasonal dishes that can only be enjoyed now! Both the recommended wine and the main dish were delicious. He told us stories about the vegetables, meat, and dressing on the plate, the history of the dishes, where they were produced, and the origin of their names, which made me feel closer to French cuisine. Visit again 🌹

Lunch: 2,850 yen The photo does not include the appetizer salad, but the salad is made with fresh local vegetables, including homemade vegetables, and goes perfectly with the special dressing. Reservations required.

I went there for dinner on my anniversary✨💍✨It was about the 5th time, and the French course was as delicious as ever⤴️I was satisfied with the owner chef's original dishes that used plenty of local vegetables from Shinshu❗I took them with me. The high school and elementary school students who went there were also happy ☺️
