Overall, the Machiyas converted layout is very bad for travelers, especially western travelers, who expect comfort. Specifically for the reasons detailed below, we will not be staying at another Machiya again.Bathroom w/ Furo- No place to hang towels- Sink is too big and very little counter spaceUpstairs Bedroom- No shower, so inconvenient- Open to stairway, no door so all the cold air comes into the spaceLiving Area- Only a dining table. No sofa to relax, only a small sitting area on the floor and away from TV. Not very comfortable settingEntry area- Open to stairway. All the cold air travels upstairs to be bedroom spaceDownstairs toilet- No washing basin, strange setup with faucet behind the toilet which is not very useful to be able to wash hands, no soap, no mirror, no place to hang towel, etc.Waher/Dryer-There should be a warning that the dryer will take 3+hours to finish. This can drastically affect guests schedule.

It was my first time renting a house and I stayed in a townhouse, and the building was clean and very comfortable. The bathroom was also spacious and comfortable. We had requested baggage delivery, and although the arrival times differed among the members of our group, they were able to store their luggage separately, so we were able to spend our first day sightseeing comfortably.I would definitely use it again!

The interior is new and very clean and comfortable. The bath also had a relaxing smell of wood. It was also helpful that there were toilets on both the 1st and 2nd floors.Since we rented the whole house, it was nice to be able to unpack our belongings and move around without worrying about other people watching us. In hotels, the microwave is outside the room and the rooms are small. I think people with children will be especially happy.

Great place near the Kyoto Station. The surrounding neighborhood is very close to a main street with different stores and tiny restaurants. Check-in was very quick and the staff are very helpful.

It's special to stay at a Machiya, and this area feels more authentic than most in Kyoto. It's by a local shopping arcade with many local businesses. The inn itself was tastefully done. Traditional, but comfortable. The wooden bath was nice.

This was my first family trip in a while, and I was very happy to be able to stay at a townhouse that I had wanted to stay in for a long time at a reasonable price. The interior is very clean and new, bright and airy, so even a large number of people (5 people staying) can stay comfortably. It didn't feel cramped and everyone was able to spend their time wherever they wanted.Although it was a cold day, all the rooms were very warm and comfortable. What everyone particularly liked was the Maki bath. It was great to take a bath while being surrounded by the scent of wood and looking out at the small garden from the small window. There are supermarkets, delicatessen shops, liquor stores, stylish cafes, restaurants, and everything else in the area, so I thought it would be perfect for a long-term stay. The location was great as it was about a 10 minute walk to Nijo Castle and within walking distance to Kawaramachi. It was a wonderful inn that I would like to come back to with my parents, relatives, and friends.thank you very much.

Loved everything about the house. The bath, beds, rooms, everything. The best part was the location being next to kyoto sanjo shopping street which had everything you could need, restaurants, convenience stores, etc. The staff was also very helpful with explaining how to get to our accommodation, checking out and sending our luggage to our next hotel. Would recommend staying here for your next trip to Kyoto.

We felt very comfortable in this Machiya. It is well located, on a side street right next to a busy shopping street. The decor is warm, cozy and authentic. The Machiya includes everything for a relaxing stay. The organization was also great, we were informed in very good English and received instructions about all the equipment and the Machiya's surroundings. It's a shame we could only stay one night.
