A hotel-ryokan with a retro atmosphere and very neat and clean. All the comforts: kimono, towels, tea, cold water, tablet to work on, very comfortable beds and onsen on the top floor from where you can see the views of the harbor. Very friendly family led by the landlady Otai. We didn't eat there but the feeling was wonderful. A must stop if you go to Toba

The rice had a strong taste and was cold and not tasty. In the room, there were blood stains on the walls and spiders and cockroaches coming out of the sink. On top of that, the toilet in the room didn't flush, and I was shocked to find that there was a katombo in the toilet on the floor. Only one towel was provided and no amenities were provided. It wasn't a good place for the price.

According to their website, Kaigetsu (海月) is an inn which was originally founded back in the Meiji era. So while it is a little old and worn out, it still has a very nice and quaint ambiance. The room I reserved was clean and everything worked, so as long as you are not nitpicky, the inn and its facilities are more than good enough. The location is great and is only 5 minutes away from the local train station as well as a couple of tourist attractions. As this is a family-run inn, it has a very homely feel, rather than professional one, so it felt like I was staying at my grandmother’s house rather than a hotel 😅. Thus, this is a great place to experience a traditional Japanese inn and their hospitality. If you can speak a little Japanese, this is a good place to interact with the landlady and the other locals as well. I also ordered breakfast on the last day and it was delicious. When I stayed there, the old landlady seemed to be the only staff I saw. She is incredibly nice and friendly, and will greet and chat with guests as they enter and leave the inn. I wasn’t sure if there was anyone helping her out, so I tried to keep my room as clean as possible when I stayed. I even received some onigiri from her when I checked out, which I ate while on the train to Nagoya and it tasted delicious. I will definitely stay at Kaigetsu if I ever come back to Mie prefecture again, and I hope the old landlady continues to live a long and happy life 😊
