This inn is a renovated inn that was built in the early Showa era and had gone out of business. …

This was the first ryokan in rural Japan that had staff that spoke English. Kevin who checked me in was from Holland and the morning staff also spoke English very well. The ryokan is at the bottom of the 9 onsen route in Shibu and the town is very small. The ground floor has a nice reception and a huge and comfy restaurant that is now only used for breakfast. The upper floors have rooms with separate bathrooms in each floor. Shower rooms are on the ground level. I had a room facing the street which had a nice view and the tatami matt room was quite large and comfortable. The 9 onsens are very small and each only has one small bath expect for one onsens that has 2 larger baths and small steam room. The best secret of the town for me was the onsen just below the monkey park. There is an old hotel there called Korakukan and they have a great outdoor onsen next to the geyser and facing the monkey park entry building on the cliff. This onsen is excellent which perfect hot water, a cold tap to keep cool and an awesome view. I was there for 4 hours and had it all to myself!

Loved it! Upon arrival, I have discovered that I had made a mistake in my reservation, but thankfully the staff was wonderful and they quickly came up with a great solution. The room that we were staying in was very nice, clean and equipped with everything we needed. Koishiya offered us a ride to see the Snow Monkeys, as well as a key to 9 onsens in vicinity. Overall, it was a great experience and I highly recommend this place!

I came across a review earlier that perfectly captures my experience. This place feels more like a hostel than a ryokan. While the first floor is well-maintained and clean, the room itself wasn’t up to par (I found hair and leftover rice) and could really use some attention. The futon was decent, but the pillows were quite uncomfortable.Having traveled around Japan for a month and stayed at various ryokans, I wouldn’t recommend this one if you’re seeking an authentic traditional experience.

In 14 years I have seen some cooked and some raw.|Ryokan at the limit of decency, others superb, others still in total abandonment. …
