We had an absolutely amazing one-night stay at modern ryokan kishi-ke. From the moment we contacted them through their website to inquire about availability, we could feel the sincerity of the hosts and how special the place would be.We were impressed by the photos online but they don’t do justice to how lovely and serene the ryokan is in person. It’s a two-story villa that sleeps only one group at a time, so you get the whole place to yourself. On one side is the beach and ocean; on the other side is a peaceful little Zen garden and the building where you check in, with a lounge downstairs.It’s a family-run ryokan, which is apparent in the well thought out details and extremely personalized service. The rooms are gorgeous, with careful touches of decor and amenities galore. The beds were so comfortable, and the highlight of the bathroom was definitely the hinoki bathtub, which was perfect for a relaxing soak.We had dinner and breakfast at the ryokan, and both meals blew us away. From the artful plating and beautiful ceramics to the quality, presentation, and flavors of the food, we were wowed over and over again with each dish that was brought out. The owner, Nobuyiki Kishi, is a tea master, and he made and served many amazing teas over the course of both meals. His wife Hitomi made the breakfast, and we’re still thinking about it several weeks later. My husband said the two meals might have been the best he’s ever eaten in his life.The location is great, a 10-minute walk to Hase-dera, and there are many shops and cafes in walking distance as well. And of course, Yuigahama Beach is right across the street. Kamakura is a lovely, peaceful city, and a perfect respite from the bustling crowds of Tokyo.Nobu and Hitomi are the quintessential hosts, and we were very grateful for their amazing hospitality.All in all, we had a fantastic experience at modern ryokan kishi-ke, and we highly recommend staying here overnight in Kamakura.
