Matsudaiya is located in the middle of Tsumago-juku, and was founded in 1804 (it is said to be), and it is said that it originally started as Kokuryu-juku. To preserve the atmosphere of those days, the guest rooms are basically separated by sliding doors, and there are no TV clocks or anything like that. It's a wonderful inn where you can feel the Edo period.

I had a wonderful one night’s stay in Matsushiroya. The location is excellent, right in the heart of Tsumago. Shirota-san was a friendly and helpful host, who was able to communicate in reasonable english. The room was comfortable in the Ryokan style. The food was excellent, plentiful and delicious with a huge variety. The bath is available in the evenings, but not the morning which was not uncommon on my trip. I was not able to book directly, so went via the Nagiso Tourism Association who were able to book for me. I would love to stay here again should I return. Highly recommended for your Nakasendo trip! This is a family run Ryokan and they do a great job.
