Stayed at Nonagase Guesthouse when I was in Chikatsuyu, while doing the Nakahechi route on the Kumano Kodo. The location is along the main road of the hike and the place was beautiful. The host Hitomi was very gracious and helpful. The meals I had while at the guest house was also top notch! Yes, it is on the pricier end but I really enjoyed my experience staying there and would do it again if I an ever in that area.

This was by far the most enjoyable stay during our three-week trip to Japan. It is a beautifully restored and maintained house from a prominent Samurai family, located a short distance from the Kumano Kodo trail. My partner and I arrived there after a full day of hiking in the pouring rain, soaked to the skin and tired. The friendly, energetic staff ushered us into a drying room and helped us to hang up our clothes to dry, and provided tea to help warm us up. Then after a bath and in warm, dry clothes, we were treated to a traditional Japanese meal prepared by their superb chef, served one small dish at a time over an hour or two. The house was set up in traditional style with tatami mats and futons, which we found very comfortable. Breakfast was simple and delicious, and even though we had a full day of hiking ahead of us, we were reluctant to leave! In short, if I ever go back to Chikatsuyu, I will stay there again!

Accommodation for the first day on the Kumano Kodo.If you are tired of the cement brick wall buildings in big cities, I recommend you to come to this B&B. Traditional Japanese wooden building materials have traditionally recorded stories. The ancient houses have been passed down to the present day and are now operated as B&Bs.Features: The door of the Japanese-style room is not ordinary frosted glass, but made of super cool traditional Japanese paper, as if you are watching some ninja movie. The tatami and furniture are all made of traditional Japanese materials, which is a very authentic Japanese experience.Service: Conversations are concise and clear, without being overly enthusiastic. The sake served by the host warms the air and adds warmth to the cold and humid weather. And because it had been raining all day, our running shoes were muddy, so the host secretly helped us dry them and wipe them clean. The next day, we didn’t even notice and had no time to say "ありがとうございます". I just decided to write this article to express my gratitude. The location is just in front of Konro Prince Bus Stop. If your first day of the ancient trail tour ends in Konro, be sure to come here to see it.

It was a great experience. After walking along Zhongbian Road, I came to Nonagase Guest House and stayed in an ancient house. My mood and experience were completely taken care of. The staff at the B&B are very considerate and kind, paying attention to every little detail. I really recommend it! The price and service are completely reasonable! Whether you are here to walk the ancient trails or not, you can stay one night and experience their dinner.
