The hotel has a charming, historic feel in its original wing, where rooms are beautifully maintained and offer a truly unique experience. However, the newer wing, unfortunately, feels more like a standard motel, lacking the character and warmth of the older part of the hotel. With some updates and attention to detail, this hotel could easily become a gem. The breakfast was excellent, with a wide selection to start the day, and the staff were incredibly accommodating, always ready to help. The location is ideal, just a few metres from the town centre, making it convenient for exploring. With some updates, this hotel could truly shine.

The stay was amazing. We had a really late reception, so when we asked for a spare blanket, i was pleasantly surprised to see it delivered in under 5 minutes. …

We came with friends for afternoon tea in the hotel's lounge which was very pleasant (and this was our fourth visit, which says it all really). As usual, we had a lovely selection of sandwiches and cakes plus the obligatory scones, jam and cream and as many hot drinks as you'd like. Vegetarians are also catered for wrt the sandwich fillings. The staff are friendly, professional and provide great service (and it's so nice to see men in suits!). There is a lovely garden to enjoy in the summer - it's a real sun trap, but there are a few trees and table umbrellas for shade. You get four hours free parking when dining, which gave us enough time for a wander around the Cathedral, which is a short walk from this centrally-located hotel. (Just remember to enter your car registration details on the touch pad in Reception when you arrive.) I would highly recommend the Winchester Royal Hotel for location and service - we'll be back.

Brilliant location and friendly staff.Rooms were tired: grey-white bedding, stained carpet, unclean cups, grotty toilet. Breakfast was average although everything seemed clean in the dining room at least!Overall, very disappointing although for a town centre hotel, it was lovely and quiet and the gardens were attractive.

Perfectly positioned for gathering from 20 to 100-plus people.Service (Saturday 12OCT2024) saw a 22-person reunion lunch alongside a multi-family wedding. Each event was catered and serviced. Not worldclass service, but perfectly reasonable lunchtime service.Located some 200yards downhill from Winchester train station and a similar distance (uphill) from the bus station. The Park & Ride service stops within 100 yards.Great garden setting, some disability access challenges in an old building.

The good. Nice spacious room. Room was clean and tidy and comes with tea coffee making facilities. The mattress was very soft as we are used to a firmer type however surprisingly very comfortable. Good powerful shower. Nice bar and lounge area plus restaurant. Nice gardens. Friendly staff and excellent location. Onsight car parking. Good value for money, would recommend and stay here again. The not so good. Room is slightly tired. Windows would mist up slightly and wires hanging from back of tv. There is obviously an issue with shower water hitting the door as the bottom is showing so wear. Air vent in bathroom did blow out some dust so would be good to be cleaned. You can hear people walking above in the room or the corridor. Had an issue getting out of the carpark due to a car not parking in a parking bay, not sure if the carpark is monitored by the hotel. Wasn't asked about our stay when booking out.

Pros:1) Location: The hotel is conveniently located very close to the city center.2) Lovely Garden: The garden is well-maintained and adds to the charm of the property.3) Helpful Staff: Raj and Tukki were especially resourceful. They answered all our questions and assisted promptly when the TV wasn’t working.Cons:Not a Four-Star Experience: The overall experience did not meet four-star standards.1) Poor Housekeeping: I understand that it is an old hotel, but, the housekeeping was unacceptable. The toilets were unclean, and there were not enough supplies provided.2) Bed Issues: The bed was not properly made, the bedsheets were not tucked in, and the mattress protector was completely torn.3) Lack of Amenities: For a four-star hotel, I expected a safe and a mini fridge for food storage, but neither was provided.4) Mediocre Breakfast: The breakfast was quite average, with not a lot of variety offered. Again, for a four star hotel this seemed quite underwhelming.

We stayed in a garden view room on the cathedral deal. The room was lovely & clean. The afternoon tea was lovely & the cakes were georgous. We were not so lucky with the evening meal choosing the red Thai chicken curry. The chicken was gristle & bone, the likes of which I have never seen. Absolutely awful. The desserts were excellent though. Many staff, most of which were friendly. If we stayed again we would stay on the bed & breakfast basis as many lovely restaurants close by in Winchester.
