As I see it, it's a beautiful hostel. I like it here so much. Everything is clean. There is a dining/common room, equipped kitchen, and also a reception. True, that there is only one bathroom for the room. However, two more are in the basement. People at the reception are friendly and helpful. The only thing I am missing are lockers, although there is a place for luggage secured by a camera.

Worst experience. Do not book. Dodgy place. I was places in a dense 12 bed dorm!! Which is different to what I booked. Bunks are placed so close to each other. No safety if something goes wrong. No lockers.I was given a middle bed of the 3 bed bunk. I couldn't fit in rather the reception could. It's only designed for children. They were hesitant to change. I couldn't even get in to the bed. I am 5;10 tall with average built. Not obese.I did moved out after one night although I had two day booking. Neither booking.com provided any refund or could do anything.

I booked together for me and my friend (2 beds in a women's room). We ended up getting separate rooms with no explanation at all, and medium willingness to make a change. The rooms seem clean enough, but there is neither some sort of common room, nor a real lobby/reception area. No lockers either. All in all, a rather dodgy place, cannot recommend a stay here.

Group of 5 Irish girls who booked 6 beds under 1 booking in a 6 bed female dorm for a weekend. We paid for the extra bed assuming we would have been given the 1 room but were split up upon arrival. In usual online bookings, it suggests if you are going to be split up into rooms i.e. 4 x female room, 2 x mixed room etc - at our time of booking it did not suggest we were going to be split up. Some of us have stayed in other hostels previously in the US & Europe where we would have been put in the same room without having to ask. This hostel has no hope of doing good business if they do not explicitly state anywhere there is a chance of being split up/having to request to stay together in your booking. The first rule they stated was that you are only allowed to stay in your assigned bed otherwise immediate cancellation of your booking - when we arrived into one room, one of our assigned beds had been taken by someone else & the sheet was dirty on another bed. The second room, our assigned beds were covered in clothes belonging to other guests & there was an unpleasant smell. We were let down immediately and decided to stay elsewhere.Once we got a confirmation of alternative accommodation, we returned back to our rooms and could not get into one as the room had been locked from the inside which makes 0 sense to have internal locks as this means other guests can’t even access their own rooms if it were to be locked on the inside?? We then eventually grabbed our bags and advised the man at the desk we were leaving who did not seem too bothered by this. We feel a lot of this would not have happened if we had been given the one room. The alternative accommodation were shocked to hear we were staying here & mentioned they heard bad experiences people had in this hostel. They also said the hostel have been known to accommodate homeless people at times which really puts into question security and safety of the hostel. We were also not asked for any form of iD when checking in further questioning security.Even considering early departure, there was no willingness to compensate us for any amount or willingness to try and arrange for us to be in one room for the second night we were due to stay. Even if we received a partial refund or an effort was put in to accommodate us as the one group for the second night, we would have appreciated it considering our expectations were not met. Seems to be profit before people considering we were completely let down & they made no effort to try to fix the situation or compensate us for the inconvenience of finding somewhere else to stay last minute. We had a poor experience overall, we did not hear good things about the hostel from local word of mouth & will not stay again or recommend Haymarket Hostel to anybody.

I booked a room here for a trip with my family in Edin, when I saw in the website and the app, it shows us available for 4 people in one room and didn’t say to share with 5 others. So, We waited for arrangement by manager and owner but they don’t want to solve this problem and didn’t give us any rooms or any contingency plan. Moreover, Having another family also come after my family and they willing to arrange and solve for them instead of us. Is there racism against Asians like us?I don’t know, then we want to get refund and don’t want to take the room, They don’t want to refund and we lost 2 nights in this hostel without living there.

The location was excellent and it was very affordable, but the experience was marred by unfriendly staff, an overcrowded room, and a lack of space for luggage. Additionally, a disturbing incident occurred when someone removed all of my belongings from my bed and placed them in a dark corner of the room, causing me great distress. This was particularly concerning given that we were not required to present any identification or provide personal information during the check-in process.

I had reservation for female room. We traveled with my mom, aunt and cousin so we want to stay in female room and we paid extra just to stay in female rooms. When we arrived the room we realized some man was sleeping in our room. We tried to reach hostel reception and there were no one in there, we reached them by whatsapp. They accepted there is a man in our room and they said that they cannot do anything, they don’t have another room. I couldn’t sleep until next morning, I was travelling with my mom, she doesn’t want to stay in this room but we don’t have any other option at midnight. Hostel didn’t help us at all, they didn’t try to fix it and apologize. I’m traveler more than 10 years and I faced kind of this situation at the first time. I never recommend this hostel anyone!

This hostel isn't fit to accommodate the number of people they’re trying to fit in. I’ve never seen this many people crammed into a 9-bed dorm. The triple-stacked beds are hard to get into and a single power outlet and single toilet isn't enough for this many people. An extremely loud alarm also went off at both 2 and 4:00 a.m. I’m not sure how common of an issue this is, but it was loud enough that I couldn't sleep.

No curtains in the rooms or bed side lamps. A member of staff called me in the middle of the day asking if it's okay to swap beds with someone, and was unpleasantly surprised when I said no. A bit sus as well.

Very new clean and quiet hostel. Not many people in, so thats on the good side. Location also seems fine too, about 25 mins walking to the centre. Completely new facilities and some spaces are still in the making. The staff is very nice and you can see they try a lot. Ill give it a 5 star as a business support push but the following things need to be considered for the future (which in reality makes it a 4 star hostel for now)- no lockers to leave your values, they say on their booking site that they are coming in June 2024- no bed lamps- no bed stands- sockets are distributed randomly around the room and not next to your bed, however in my specific dorm there were enough for everyone- no oven or any other possibility to cook food- wifi was on and off
