Fantastic location for our daughters wedding. Wedding went smoothly. Manager does not have the people skills for hospitality.Disappointing, when we hear how tough it is in hospitality, to have to get food elsewhere due to kitchen not serving. If this information had been shared at check-in, food could have been ordered at a time to suit the kitchen. Nobody asked if desserts were required from the party that did manage to order food. Bar was often unmanned. Hotel could have had more money in the till if times had been communicated.Rooms are very comfortable, grounds amazing, breakfast was fresh and cooked to order. Little changes could have made the experience so much better

I took my son to Scotland recently for his 19th birthday. Due to our flight getting canceled, we were late getting in. Our original accommodation would not accept us after 8 p.m.  …

Very disappointing.Does not live up to the "hype" on Booking.com.4 nights, bed, breakfast & evening meal for 2 people in a double room @ £142 per night.Under new ownership since 2017, the new(ish) regime obviously cares less about maintenance & refurbishment than wringing every last possible drop of profit from the place before selling it on to the next schmuck.Interior tired and shabby. Chaplin restaurant shocking & unhygienic (dead insects & cobwebs in corners of most windows, damaged & unrepaired furniture & trims ... napkins used unsuccessfully to steady rickety tables). Lingering smell of fish. Evening food not great.Serving staff are friendly though. After all, the state of repair and decor is not their fault. But dinner reservation was changed to 45 minutes later than agreed and without informing us, due to a coach party arriving. Only discovered when we arrived on-time to eat. As a person with diabetes, I'd already injected my insulin in anticipation of eating soon (supposed to inject no more than 30 minutes before eating).Surprisingly, breakfast in the main restaurant was OK. Still not the best though.Overall, overpriced, over-expected (thanks to misleading advertising) and under-performed.Lesson learned. Will not be back.Despite everything else, the basic fabric of the building is fine and the secluded setting is excellent ... but SERIOUSLY needs a thorough renewal ... which I don't believe it's going to get under the present ownership.

I travelled from the USA for a wedding. I was booked in for 2 nights. On day 1, the wedding party and guests arrived to be met by a lady at reception who could not have been less welcoming if she tried. It went downhill from there. …

Hotel is very tired with worn and stained furniture and fittings. A general lack of interest and care seems to be a theme. Bed made badly, WiFi not working, no flexibility on when people can eat.  …

Not a cheap stay, think about £130 per night. Room and corridors very tired, stains and holes in carpets, old furniture and not very clean overall. Only time they could offer for dinner was 8pm, even if I wanted to eat in the bar apparently. WiFi didn't work, was told to reboot my phone, but when I went to reception to complain again, I was given a different WiFi to connect to (info printed out ready to go, bit suspicious). Front desk staff not interested in helping at all re dinner time or WiFi. Bathroom very tired with mouldy seals and dirty floors. Won't be back

The hotel is set back well of the highway, on a peaceful setting down a long tree-lined driveway. Historic main building, we stayed in the secondary building with a nice room with plenty of space. A good bathroom, and a comfortable quiet night's sleep.

Interesting timing that just as John Cleese launches the stage version of Fawlty Towers we end up staying in the real thing in the North East of Scotland. …

Class! Venerable old house, somewhat past its prime but with classic charm. Nice ambience, great service and very good food. Afternoon tea is not to be missed. Great park, good parking and the sea is around two street corners. Any time!
