What a lovely old quaint hotel...Fantastic staff,,,,Great chef and food,,,,recommend the prawn cocktail with a twist and the rump steak with blue stilton sauce. The Argentinian bar guy was nice and really helpfull...nothing flash ,but nothing too much trouble..Great location for Durham.. they even provided us with a route planner when we struggled to get directions..will definitely go back..

Popped up for lunch and to have yet another look round as me and husband to be are getting married there in 9 weeks. Went in with a friend and three children for lunch, staff all lovely as usual and eager to help. My 5 year old wanted paper and crayons (she's five, it's a make or break deal for her) she got some and was happy, she also wanted chicken nuggets and chips, the chunky handmade chips and REAL chicken nuggets were lovely! We had a proper steak and ale pie, lots of thick tender chunks of steak and perfect pastry. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit, back there for christening on sunday and really looking forward to it.

Visited the hotel for sunday lunch on Easter Sunday. The welcome was warm and courteous and the food was absolutely superb. It was cooked to perfection, ample servings and excellent value for money. We finished off with a round of drinks in the lounge with fabulous views across Weardale. A day to remember!

Wow. Yes hotel is dated and tv is crap but who cares. Staff, food and views in that order what more could you need. I would pay double for this. Lets face it i have stayed in some s**t holes and been refunded by hotels with 5stars. This place is great just sit and watch the sun set over the wear valley with a bottle and ye partner after been waited on hand and foot by the staff nothing is a problem and if ye need to switch the dated tv on your in the wrong part of england.
