Runza Casserole Dish

Ingredients List
Crust Ingredients:
-
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, or as needed
-
¼ cup butter, softened
-
2 tablespoons white sugar
-
1 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
-
½ teaspoon salt
-
½ cup warm water
Filling Ingredients:
-
1 pound ground beef
-
1 onion, chopped
-
1 small head cabbage, cored and shredded
-
1 tablespoon garlic powder, or to taste
-
salt and ground black pepper to taste
-
4 slices processed cheese food (such as Velveeta), or to taste
Instructions
-
Prepare the crust: In a large bowl, combine flour, butter, sugar, yeast, and salt. Add warm water and mix until a soft dough forms. On a floured surface, roll the dough and knead for 3 to 4 minutes until it becomes elastic. Place the dough in a bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour.
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Prepare the filling: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook beef and onion, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and crumbled, about 5 to 10 minutes. Drain excess grease. Add cabbage and cook, stirring frequently, until softened, about 10 minutes. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
-
Divide the dough into two portions. Roll each part to fit an 8-inch square baking dish. Press one portion into the bottom and up the sides of the dish. Spoon the beef mixture on top, followed by a layer of cheese slices. Top with the second dough portion and pinch the edges of both layers together to seal.
-
Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes, or until the crust is lightly golden. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the filling is thoroughly heated. Let the casserole sit for about 5 minutes before serving.
