Cinnamon rolls are beloved for their swirl, sweetness, and indulgence. But what happens when you turn these rolls savory? The result is a delicious surprise. When we first saw food blogger Jonathan Melendez lead the way with his Savory Taco 'Cinnamon' Rolls, we knew we had to try this new culinary adventure.
It may sound strange at first, but instead of the usual buttery, sweet filling, imagine a savory mix of seasoned meat and melted cheese. Instead of a sugary glaze, picture a generous pour of creamy white queso. These rolls offer a full Tex-Mex experience, with refried beans inside and avocado slices on top. Perfect for brunches, tailgates, or potlucks, these unique rolls will definitely stand out.
Jonathan Melendez from The Candid Appetite isn't stopping at taco rolls—he's been crafting savory creations like Savory Muffuletta 'Cinnamon' Rolls and Spinach Artichoke Rolls. Whatever dish you can think of, he’s probably turned it into a cinnamon roll. (And his sweet treats? Just as impressive.)
For a denser, chewier texture (but without adding much time), swap store-bought pizza dough for homemade yeasted dough. Just be careful not to roll the dough too thin, or the rolls won’t rise properly. These rolls are also a great way to use up leftover ground beef or refried beans from taco night, and you can top them off with any taco or nacho ingredients you have on hand.
How to Prepare Savory Taco 'Cinnamon' Rolls
Recipe inspired by The Candid Appetite
- 1 16oz portion fresh pizza dough
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 lb. lean ground beef
- ½ onion, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1 tablespoon taco seasoning
- 2 teaspoons tomato paste
- 1 cup prepared refried beans
- 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
- 2 cups prepared queso
- Optional toppings: chopped cilantro, avocado slices, pico de gallo, lime juice
- In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and cook the ground beef until browned. Add the onion and garlic, cooking until the onion becomes translucent. Stir in the water, taco seasoning, and tomato paste until well combined. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F and prepare a buttered 9x13-inch baking dish. On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a large rectangle, about ¼ inch thick. Spread a thin layer of refried beans over the dough. Spoon the beef mixture evenly over the beans, and top with a generous amount of shredded Cheddar cheese.
- Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Slice into 12 equal pieces using a serrated knife. Arrange the rolls, cut side down, in the baking dish and bake for 25-30 minutes.
- Drizzle with warm queso and your choice of toppings, then serve immediately.
