Ultimate Brioche French Toast

Ingredients List
-
1 ½ cups milk
-
4 large eggs
-
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
-
1 teaspoon white sugar
-
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
-
1 pinch salt
-
1 tablespoon butter, divided, or more as needed
-
6 (1 inch) thick slices dry brioche bread
-
¼ cup butter
-
6 tablespoons maple syrup, or more to taste
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
In a bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, vanilla, sugar, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt.
-
Melt 1 1/2 teaspoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. In batches, dip each slice of brioche into the egg mixture and fry in the hot butter until golden, about 2 to 3 minutes per side, adding more butter as needed. Arrange the French toast on a baking sheet.
-
Bake in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until puffed and slightly crisped.
-
In a skillet, melt 1/4 cup of butter over medium-low heat, stirring until it turns golden and fragrant, about 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat and transfer the browned butter to a separate dish. Drizzle over the baked French toast and top each slice with 1 tablespoon of maple syrup.
Helpful Tips for the Recipe
If you prefer, you can substitute challah for the brioche.
For best results, let fresh bread sit out overnight to slightly dry before using it.
