4 Cruise Tips to Enhance Your Next Vacation

A cruise offers one of the most convenient and thrilling getaways you can enjoy. With a plethora of activities and diverse ports of call, there’s always something exciting happening around the clock.
As you embark on more cruises, your experience improves as you discover tips that enhance the journey. During my last voyage, I consulted seasoned cruisers—those who have explored numerous ships over the years—to share their insights. Here are their recommendations.
#1 Sample Multiple Entrees or Desserts

Many first-time cruisers are unaware that they can enjoy multiple appetizers, entrees, or desserts during dinner. So, if you're torn between the filet and the salmon—order both! Prefer two appetizers instead of a main dish? Or can’t decide on just one dessert? Feel free to indulge in two appetizers and two desserts. One of the many advantages of cruising is the ability to tailor your meals to your liking. This flexibility embodies what Freestyle Cruising represents.
#2 Avoid the Main Buffet on Embarkation Day

On embarkation day, the main buffet tends to get crowded as most cruisers flock there first. What many don’t realize is that several other dining options are usually available on this day. Check the daily schedule or inquire with a crew member about which venues are open for lunch. You’ll enhance your first day by enjoying a more relaxed dining experience after boarding the ship.
#3 Pack Your Carry-On Thoughtfully

On embarkation day at the cruise dock, you'll hand over your larger suitcases to the porter for check-in. You are allowed to carry on a small bag and personal items. Keep in mind that your checked luggage may not arrive until later in the evening after it has gone through security checks. The crew has countless pieces of luggage to manage and deliver. To make the most of your first day, pack your carry-on with all the essentials you'll need. Don’t forget any necessary medications. Include a change of clothes, a bathing suit, and a casual outfit for dinner. If your ship features a ropes course, rock climbing, basketball, or other activities, pack appropriate clothing for those sports as well.
#4 Book Excursions Through the Cruise Line

One of the joys of cruising is exploring the various ports you visit. You can do this by reserving shore excursions. Cruise lines offer organized excursions for an extra fee, but you also have the option to book through independent companies. If you’re on a budget, you might consider bypassing the ship’s excursions in favor of independent ones. However, be cautious of low prices; they might not reflect the quality you expect.
One cruise veteran I spoke with, Martin, recounted his experience with an independent tour operator. He was promised a comprehensive guided tour to see some of "Jamaica's most stunning natural sights." Unfortunately, Martin’s group didn’t visit the locations mentioned in the tour description, and the tour guide appeared fatigued and disinterested. Martin’s story illustrates the potential pitfalls of booking independent excursions. The best way to ensure a fulfilling experience in port is to book with a tour operator that has been thoroughly vetted by the cruise line.
