Banana Island: A luxurious oasis off the coast of Doha

When you think of a Doha vacation, overwater villas, sun-kissed beaches, and crystal-clear waters might not be the first things that come to mind.
However, just a short distance from the city lies an exceptional destination that offers exactly that, and so much more.
Banana Island, with its unique crescent shape, has quickly become a premier getaway for luxury travelers since its opening in 2015.
Managed by Thailand's Anantara group, this exclusive resort boasts Qatar's only overwater bungalows, some featuring private infinity pools and lounging decks. It also stands as one of just two overwater bungalow resorts in the Gulf, with the second located at the Palm Resort in Dubai.
A Haven of Tranquility
Banana Island impresses with its luxurious vibe and exceptional comfort, offering a first glimpse of paradise reminiscent of the Maldives, with palm-thatched villas and lavish rooms with stunning sea views.
The exclusive resort is accessible by catamaran from Dhow Harbour, close to the Museum of Islamic Arts, or via private yacht.
Guests choosing the catamaran ride will be greeted with warm hospitality, enjoying a journey complemented by Arabian coffee, dates, and refreshing water.
After a 20-minute ride, visitors are welcomed to the 13-acre island with the rhythmic beat of drums, signaling their arrival into a realm of pure relaxation.
The 141 rooms, villas, and bungalows are styled with intricate Arabic designs, featuring luxurious mosaic-tiled bathrooms, and equipped with modern amenities like automated curtains, flat-screen TVs, mini-bars, and coffee machines.
"What struck me the most was how spacious even the standard room was," said Alexander Köhler, a 26-year-old South African expat in Doha, who regularly visits Banana Island. He shared his experience in 2019.
"I had a comfy recliner on my terrace with a breathtaking ocean view," he continued. "The bathrooms were stunning, and the restaurant overlooking the water was fantastic—you could watch fish swimming beneath you."
Beach Retreats

When not relaxing on the private 800-meter beach, guests can enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities to stay entertained.
Activities include diving, kayaking, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, or even testing your skills on a surfing simulator.
For those seeking a more laid-back experience, the picturesque sea swing offers a relaxing ride above the shallow waters, perfect for Instagram moments.
The resort also offers exclusive experiences, such as afternoon tea tours, a private 'dining by design' for special celebrations, and a range of luxurious spa treatments.
International visitors should note that Qatar is an Islamic country, and as per local customs, Banana Island is a dry resort. Guests are not permitted to bring their own alcohol for private consumption.
However, they can enjoy refreshing mocktails by the lagoon pool, engage in beach sports, play a round of golf, or indulge in a variety of cuisines at the island's many restaurants, offering everything from Middle Eastern and Asian specialties to American comfort food and Italian fine dining.
A fleet of electric golf carts is always available to whisk you around the island in style.
Family Favorites

If the scorching Gulf sun becomes too intense, there are plenty of indoor activities to enjoy.
Guests can unwind at the island's spa and wellness center, test their skills at the multi-lane bowling alley, enjoy a game of pool or foosball, or relax in comfort with blankets and pillows while watching the latest blockbusters in a private 20-seat movie theater.
A favorite among families, the resort also features a children’s cinema, a kids' club, and a pool with exciting water slides.
While the resort attracts overnight guests from Qatar, Germany, Russia, and the UK, it is also a popular destination for day-trippers looking to escape the bustling streets of Doha and enjoy some tranquility before heading back to the lively city.
