Although Athens is filled with magnificent sights, many travelers have historically viewed Greece’s capital as merely a stopover en route to Santorini and Mykonos. However, in recent years, the city has blossomed into a destination of its own, featuring a vibrant cultural scene, trendy restaurants, and an influx of remarkable new hotels like Apollo Palm Hotel and One&Only Aesthesis. Now, its historical monuments are just one of many reasons to visit.
How Voting Works
Each year, for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L invites readers to contribute their travel experiences from around the world—sharing their insights on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and beyond. In 2024, over 186,000 T+L readers participated in the survey, casting more than 700,000 votes across more than 8,700 properties (including hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).
Hotels were categorized as resort hotels, city hotels, inns, or safari lodges based on their location and amenities, with evaluations based on the criteria listed below:
- Accommodations/amenities
- Location
- Service
- Cuisine
- Value
Respondents were able to rate each attribute as excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores reflect the average of these ratings.
What Readers Enjoyed
With the multitude of attractions in Greece’s capital, it’s no wonder that two of the most popular hotels among readers are located in the heart of the historic center, within easy reach of the Acropolis, the vibrant Plaka neighborhood, and the upscale Voukourestiou shopping street. Guests at King George, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens — which earned the No. 3 position on this year’s list — praised its exceptional location on Syntagma Square, the city’s bustling meeting point filled with charming cafés and eateries. A short 10-minute stroll leads to this year’s runner-up, A77 Suites, a beautifully restored 19th-century neoclassical mansion transformed into a cozy boutique hotel. “It combines the charm of a townhouse with hotel-like services,” enthused one guest, who appreciated its stunning architecture and lively ambiance. However, to discover this year’s No. 1, you’ll need to swap Athens’ urban energy for a slice of Riviera relaxation. Read on for more details.
