Discover how to enjoy fall foliage even in these bustling cities.
The autumn season officially kicks off on September 22, and there's no reason you can't start planning your fall foliage adventures, no matter your location.
To assist with your plans and ensure you catch the leaves changing at the perfect moment, SmokyMountains.com offers an interactive fall foliage prediction map. While this tool (and similar ones) can't guarantee exact timing or locations for peak colors, its creators analyze millions of data points to develop the map at a county level.
The map has been refreshed for the 2021 season, allowing you to gauge the optimal timing for trips based on your chosen destination.
When envisioning the great outdoors, a major city might not be the first place that springs to mind. However, there are spots to appreciate fall foliage, even if you're in a metropolitan area. Here's your guide to leaf-peeping in and around four large U.S. cities.
Atlanta

You can redeem points to stay in charming towns like Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg (consider the Black Fox Pigeon Forge Lodge, a Tapestry Collection by Hilton) or choose a cozy cabin rental. For breathtaking views of the autumn colors, visit the observation deck at Clingman's Dome or take one of the picturesque drives in the region, such as Cade's Cove Loop Road, the Blue Ridge Parkway, or the Foothills Parkway.
Boston

There's something for everyone in The Berkshires—whether you enjoy hiking, sampling local cuisine, or exploring the area's rich culture and history.
While there are numerous hotels available, you might consider treating yourself to a stay at the Miraval resort in the Berkshires if you have Hyatt points to spend.
This adults-only wellness retreat is just a short drive from many major cities in the Northeast, offering a convenient choice for a quick getaway. Your stay at Miraval includes meals, non-alcoholic beverages, and a variety of activities. However, it doesn't fall into a category on the World of Hyatt award chart, with free nights costing 45,000 points for one guest each night. You can add a second adult for an extra 20,000 points per night. This remains an excellent redemption opportunity, especially since cash rates can reach nearly $1,300 per night.
Central Vermont is another great option for residents of Boston, located about a three-hour drive from the city. Nestled in the heart of Woodstock, the historic Woodstock Inn & Resort—founded by Laurence and Mary Rockefeller—has recently undergone a $16 million renovation, refreshing its Federalist-style architecture and 142 guest rooms and suites. With its picturesque mountain views and charming small-town atmosphere, it makes for a delightful autumn escape.
The bustling metropolis of New York City

For a glimpse of autumn's vibrant colors without leaving the city, Central Park stands out as a prime destination. This iconic park features over 18,000 trees and is perfect for photos, leisurely picnics, or simply enjoying the scenery.
Each year, the Central Park Conservancy releases a fall foliage map, and guided tours traverse the Pool to the North Woods Ravine for an intimate experience. Recommended highlights include the Mall, the Reservoir, and the Pool as top spots to explore.
During my visit to Central Park in mid-November 2020, the foliage was past its prime yet still stunning. If you're aiming to witness the leaves in their full glory, plan your trip a bit earlier in the season.
For those visiting the area, several accommodations offer views of the park, including the Marriott Bonvoy Category 7 Le Méridien New York, Central Park (starting at 50,000 points per night), the Category 7 World of Hyatt Park Hyatt New York (30,000 points per night), and the Hilton Conrad New York Midtown (with rates that can fluctuate as Hilton doesn't adhere to a fixed award chart).
If you're looking to escape the city, Saratoga Springs is just a three-hour drive or a four-hour Amtrak ride to the north. Visiting between mid-September and early October gives you a chance to witness the harvest. From there, you can easily discover picturesque Lake George and the majestic peaks of the Adirondacks. While points hotels are available, opting for a bed and breakfast or a cabin might offer a more genuine experience.
Orlando

However, the Sunshine State offers more than just beaches, palm trees, and theme parks. According to SmokeyMountains.com, Florida experiences a vibrant fall foliage season. Visitors can enjoy autumn colors in various state parks, including the Flying Eagle Preserve, which is about a 90-minute drive from Orlando. The Smokey Mountains website highlights the Virginia creeper plant, known for its stunning grape hue in the fall.
Orlando boasts no shortage of accommodations, particularly if you're looking to merge a fall foliage adventure with a visit to Disney World. With over 400 hotels and 100,000 hotel rooms, plus Airbnbs, timeshares, and other options, there's something for everyone. The hotels near the Flying Eagle Preserve tend to be lower-category Hilton and Marriott properties, but you'll also find charming B&Bs and RV resorts for those seeking a unique stay.
