Essential Information for Visiting Saudi Arabia
Planning a trip to Saudi Arabia can feel overwhelming, especially since it has been largely closed to international travelers for years. However, the kingdom’s recent embrace of tourism has introduced new infrastructure and procedures to ease access: travelers can now apply online for a multiple-entry eVisa, valid for one year, at a cost of around $142. Tour operators like U.K.-based Wild Frontiers offer immersive experiences that take visitors from the world’s largest camel market near Buraydah to ancient petroglyphs at the Jubbah oasis, as well as to the cities of Jeddah and Riyadh. Dinogo’s Travel Advisory Council members can also assist with trip planning.
Optimal Time to Visit
The ideal months to visit Saudi Arabia are from November to March, offering comfortable temperatures ranging from the 50s in the Hijaz Mountains to the 70s and 80s along the coast. This period also features numerous events, including AlUla Moments, the MDLBeast music festivals, the Islamic Arts Biennale, and the Red Sea International Film Festival, among others.
Cultural Etiquette
- In recent years, rules regarding women’s clothing have become much more lenient, and it’s no longer necessary to wear an abaya (the traditional full-length dress) and scarf in public. However, both male and female travelers should adhere to cultural expectations by wearing modest clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. Women should keep a scarf handy when visiting a mosque, as head coverings are required.
- Alcohol is banned in Saudi Arabia and is unavailable in restaurants, hotels, venues, or events.
- During the month of Ramadan (March 22 to April 20 in 2023), many restaurants remain closed until after sunset. While some hotels serve meals throughout the day for those not fasting, it's advisable to refrain from eating or drinking in public during daylight hours to show respect.
- In general, public displays of affection should be avoided throughout Saudi Arabia.
Accommodations
As the financial, cultural, and culinary center of the country, Riyadh is the most vibrant city in Saudi Arabia. The Four Seasons hotel places you in the capital’s most iconic skyscraper, the Kingdom Centre, topped by the stunning Sky Bridge.
On the shores of the Red Sea, Jeddah is a laid-back, cosmopolitan city with a rich history dating back to the 7th century. The luxurious Shangri-La Jeddah opened its doors in February 2022, adding to the city’s hotel offerings.
Home to Nabataean tombs carved into rocky formations across a vast desert, AlUla is located about 423 miles north of Jeddah along the historic incense route. It is the site of Al-Hijr, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage site, designated in 2008.
In 2021, the government launched a $15 billion initiative aimed at transforming the ancient city into a global arts and culture destination. Changes are already visible: the Habitas AlUla hotel and nearby Habitas caravans harmonize with an ochre valley adorned with contemporary art installations; the Banyan Tree AlUla also opened in late 2022 close to the Maraya concert hall. From 2025 to 2027, three additional resorts by Aman will debut in the AlUla region, including a tented camp and a ranch-style property.
