There’s a poignant tale behind this grand festival. In 869, a devastating plague swept through, claiming countless lives. To ward off further misfortune, the Japanese people organized the Gion Matsuri ceremony to honor the spirits of those who succumbed to the disease.
In addition to soothing the spirits, the ceremony was also a prayer to the healing deity, Susanoo no Mikoto, for relief from the plague. Eventually, after the ritual was conducted, the illness began to wane.
Since that time, the Japanese have celebrated this ceremony each year to express their gratitude to Susanoo no Mikoto for his blessings.

From July 14 to 16, a grand procession of yamaboko takes place, accompanied by food, drink, souvenir stalls, and carnival games.
Additionally, fairs are hosted at the residences of prominent business families along the main road of Karasuma-dori, showcasing treasured items that reflect the pride of the homeowners.
The centerpiece of the Gion Matsuri is the yamaboko procession, along with the transport of three mikoshi through the streets of downtown Kyoto. At the end of July, the mikoshi is returned to the shrine for washing. The Gion Matsuri concludes with a closing ceremony known as Nagoshimatsuri.
