Frontier intensifies New York expansion with a third nonstop flight from JFK
One step at a time, Frontier Airlines continues to grow its presence at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
The budget airline based in Denver announced on Thursday that it will introduce its third nonstop route from the airport.
Beginning in August, Frontier will initiate daily flights from the bustling New York hub to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), known as the world's busiest airport.
This announcement follows just weeks after Frontier launched its inaugural flight from JFK to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Frontier is also launching another nonstop flight to Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) on the same day, August 13, as the Atlanta service.
"We are excited to introduce this new service at JFK, providing local travelers with affordable and convenient options to Atlanta and beyond," stated Josh Flyr, Frontier's vice president of network and operations design, in a press release.
Here’s how the airline’s route map from JFK will look once this latest nonstop service begins in August:
CIRIUMStrengthening its presence in New York
Frontier will face competition on its JFK-to-Atlanta route, as both Delta Air Lines and JetBlue, which operate hubs at JFK, also offer flights between these airports. Delta, in particular, has a significant hub in Atlanta.
While Frontier's expansion at JFK is noteworthy—having never served the airport until this summer—the airline's overall growth in the New York City market is impressive as well.
In the midst of a broader network overhaul aimed at enhancing profitability, the ultra-low-cost carrier plans to increase its seat capacity by 207% across the metro area’s three largest airports: JFK, LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), according to aviation analytics firm Cirium.
Recently, Frontier resumed nonstop service from Newark to San Juan, reflecting a route it also started this month from JFK.
Key takeaways
Don't expect the lavish experience offered by some international airlines at JFK, especially with Delta Air Lines having just unveiled a stylish new Delta One Lounge this week.
Nevertheless, Frontier is adding more competition to the market with its expanding range of nonstop flights. For travelers willing to spend a little extra, the airline offers the Upfront Plus seating option, which provides additional legroom and a blocked middle seat.
